Default Can you make your own Kit?....

After looking at the STS rear mount, and seeing a picture of the parts, I have the bug to now add a turbo to my car. I would like to buy it in bits and pieces, so as to hide the cost from the wife...lol. In looking at things, is it possible to buy items, such as turbo's and BOV's and essentials here and there, and then make a final assembly by having all the plumbing done at once?

I know all items will need to be compatible with each other, but if you check around, you can always find great deals on just a turbo or BOV from someone who either upgraded to pure race stuff, or never finished their project.

Is there a resource that would give me a list of all the parts I would need? I am just throwing this out there to see if others are doing it this way, or if everyone just buys a kit and goes from there....

Thanks in advance..........

yes you can do it. you need a welder, chop saw, portable band saw (its nice). and you need to know how to use the welder too. unless you wanted to use silicone hose everywhere which is just a horrible idea imo.

You will need clamps, lines to run to the oil pan and to feed the turbo with oil. not sure what the sts kit does about getting oil back to the turbo.

lots of tools of course. lots of hours.

imo the price of the sts is VERY resonable. id say do it. the only reason to fab a kit is if you are going hardcore race style. in which case you pretty much have no choice other than to fab one up.

It doesnt have to be all out race style to build your own kit....the sts kit comes with a small turbo anywayz.....i am in the process of building my own kit. its pretty much identical to the sts but with a t70 in its place....and in the end after the plumbing, turbo, wastegate (lets just say everything that comes with the sts kit) PLUS larger injectors and fuel pump and the dyno tuning, i am still under what the sts cost alone.....PM for any questions

You can build a similar sts kit, for ~$1500. Less if you dont use coated pipe.

Been there done that, I built a kit similar to the STS kit, all piping from the headers back to the turbo and then back to the motor, all parts including 3 gauges, wiring, oil system etc. cost me about $2000 with a master Power T70, Tial BOV, Tial Wastegate etc. The exhaust piping feedint the turbo was a 4in pipe, all of the piping from the turbo forward was stainless steel which is where most of the cost came from. Without gauges and a few other misc parts it can be done for under $1500 like mentioned above, also my kit was hidden under the airlid so when you popped the hood it looked stock!

I thought about doing the same thing. Me and a buddy peiced together a kit for about 1500 or less, so as long as you have means to a welder and piping, you should not have a problem.

make sure the shop can do mandrel bending. I just buy mandrel bent tubing and cut it up to work. McMaster-Carr sells a ton of metal tubing and various companies sell flanges and collectors.

Default rear mount

yep a DIY rear mount can be done easily. mine ran about $1800. i just bought most of my piping and oil lines from summit racing. the rest of the turbo stuff form various turbo suppliers. system works great too!

I had an exhaust shop do all of the cutting and welding, I drew out how the kit would be piped and bought all the mandrel bends I thought I would need, worked great. I have pics of the kit but not on this computer.

If you dont know much about setting up turbos would you recommend building your own or say buying the STS kit. Is there any good turbo setup info that anyone would recommend?

I'm not to experienced in turbo building, and pardon me for not using the search engine more explicitly, but is it really easy to install if you have the parts? Would I be better off buying it from sts directly, or having a good turbo shop make a remote mount kit for me?
