Default Help building boosted 408...

I'm throwing a few ideas around in my head for my next motor and have come to the conclusion that forced induction will be the best way for me to go. I'm building THE weekend warrior and wanted a little help from the experienced techies who know their ****.

I plan to have the following set-up running about 8.0:1 to 8.5:1 and shooting for over 700rwhp on pump gas. Please let me know any suggestions that you guys might have for a set-up that will match this. I would like to utilize a blower for this set-up as I won't have 10k to sink into a turbo kit after forking out the cash for this engine. I may consider it though. Right now, I'm open to any suggestions that you guys might have.

Either a LS2 or 6.0 Liter Iron Block with the following mods:

Eagle Forged 4" Crankshaft

Eagle Forged I- Beam Rods

Diamond Pistons with 28-36cc dish (4" Bore)

AFR/TEA Stage 3 Heads

Comp 921 Springs

.238 / .244 .595 / .610 114LSA

Bolted up with ARP Everything

Kooks SS 1 7/8 Headers

Kooks 3" ORY

Jessel 1.7 Non adjustable Shaft Mounts

NX 50hp Kit If Necessary

Thanks guys...

I'm going to suggest the phamspeed single turbo kit, drop the headers, ORY, NX kit and go with the turbo kit.

Oh also I think I would drop the AFRs to start with, they are a lot of money and you can have most of your forced induction setup for that price.

What size turbo would you suggest I run with that engine set-up?

Also, what type of numbers would I see from the turbo that you suggest while still staying in pump gas territory?

My car is lowered an inch and I've heard about problems with the under the k-member routing with those kits. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

D

How are your fabrication skills? I intend to build my own turbo kit utilizing 6.0 truck manifolds. That might be a way to keep costs down somewhat. As far as turbo selection goes, go big ( more efficient). Keep in mind that 15 psi coming from a 60mm turbo is not the same as 15 psi coming from an 88mm turbo. The larger turbo will help to keep IATs down, affording the use of pump gas with big boost. This is why most of the turbo-ed heavy-hitters from the Pump Gas Drags are using very large turbos on their combinations.

Well I would like something streetable. Basically I want a weekend warrior with 80 / 20 meaning street / track.

I am open to knocking the cubes down if necessary. Everything is pretty much still in the air as I always read things for about a month or two and do a **** load of research before I jump. How's the PTK kit for our cars? I really don't want to go under the K member for piping. As for my fab skills, well, let's just say I've never even touched a pipe bender.

Any suggestions?

Thanks again guys.

i wouldnt drop the AFR's if he can, because of the thicker deck,he wont have to worry about lifting heads at high boost, plus they flow great! But yup go Phamspeed with like a T88.

224/230 .580/.580 114 dur with a 408ci motor?

Isn't that really small? I would think I would still be HP on the table with that cam in a 408ci right?

Why has no one said anything about the PTK Turbo Kit for the LS1?

98-02 LS1 Turbo System (Air to Air Intercooled) - $4,800.00

PTE 88
T-88 4 Bolt Turbo - $1,650.00

Would this have a lot of lag with the cubes I was planning? What type of power would I make with the above T88? What about the T76?

With the 408 cubes, no, that turbo won't have much lag. The problem with the PTK kit is that no one has flanged up a T88 to it to see if it'll work. I'm sure with some fabbing, it wouldn't be much of a problem. The limiting factor in a T76 is the exhaust flow. Biggest A/R you can get for them is what, a .96. With the extra cubes of a 408, it becomes choked up when you try to maximize the efficiency. I don't think anyone has anything against the PTK kits, its just that we haven't seen concrete numbers. No one on here has installed and run it. Also remember that turbos don't need huge cams to make power.

Well, would you guys suggest the pham speed kit with my car being lowered and the piping running UNDER the k-member? That scares the **** out of me!

I'm not paying $2K for hot parts that will be ripped off at the next speed bump.

I'd go with different rods, those Eagles are heavy. you may have to push that D1SC a little too hard for pump gas, step up to a F1 and run lower boost levels. That cam may be a bit too much you can get away with smaller and have better driveability.

You have not taken into consideration your driveline. Your big hp motor will find your weak links fast, One other thing you have not mentioned is your fuel system.

Not at all. FI is totally different. You can run a bigger Cam but you might give up 50-70hp in the midrange where it counts.

We are running a 220 Cam in a 408 car right now and plan on bringing it to 900-1000rwhp soon enough

Ok, suppose I go with the F1R ATI Blower...wouldn't that be a tractionless piece of **** unless I'm on the highway doing 80? I would think with that blower, my low end would be **** but then at 3k it would blow the tires up until my shift point. Am I too far off on that? I've already got a big cam in my stock 346 right now and hate the lack of low end.

I'm driving it NA right now and it drives awesome. No bucking anywhere, even in 1st at 1000rpm putting along.Throttle response is instant at any rpm.

An F1R should put you over 1000hp if done right.

A D1 will be controllable. The 408/D1 combo will kill your current combo at any rpm if you run the right Cam.Too big of a Cam will kill low end again. That is why I recommend the smaller Cams on FI cars

This is where I'll ultimately go. So I'm tracking it closely. (PureEvyl's car right?) Just wish I know what my pending purchase situation is, haven't heard any update for over a week and no response to my email from friday (though I know the seller is in the process of a move). I hope to hell it pans out as I'm getting real antsy
