So, do you guys think that one of these turbos will even begin so spool on a gas engine with around 400 C.I.?

Will all depend. Most of your diesel turbos aren't that big in wheel size. They run huge frames, but typically only a 76mm or 82 some are larger though. If thats the case, it will spool fine as long as the A/R isn't like stupid big...lol.

Maybe. Remember, Diesels aren't meant to rev nearly as much as a gas motor.

It would be cool to be able to build some serious power without having to lay out the ducats for a monster turbo, at least not right away. I'm sure there are better turbos to use on an application like this, but I would like to experiment with what I have. Don't worry Jose, I'll be hitting you up for all the goodies like wastegate, BOV, boost controller, etc. I'll post up the numbers as soon as I have them, but it probably won't be until after midnight at least.

Yeah...it sounds cool. You should see what all they do to the diesels to get them to live under the enormus boost pressures they run. BTW, how about EGT's in the 2100-2400 deg range...lol. And no they do not run standard AL pistons like we use in gas motors...hehe. They are custom Steel pistons and the exhaust turbine wheels are Inconel, but they are now moving to a newer material called Mar-M247. Your typical tractor goes through turbos every couple of passes...hehe

I think I'll stay away from those dam things. Blown Nitro is hard enough on a pocketbook. I just play with my LS1 to relax.

I hate to think how much power those tractor pullers are making. Not the turbine powered gigs, but the piston stuff. I'd have to guess they are making power to rival fuel motors, aren't they? I mean, they're sitting their pulling over 40,000lbs of dead weight that applies more pressure to the hitch the further down the track you get. I'm with you sandman, definitely don't want to be playing in that ball field unless you have some seriously deep pockets.

Alright, I went and got the numbers off of the turbos.

The one that has been rebuilt goes as follows:
Assembly: 3527102
Serial: 314170
Type: HT80

The 'spare':
Assembly: 3527102
Serial: H0001031
Type: HT80

I don't have a digital camera, but beleive me when I say these things are HUGE. The Mandingo of turbos. It looks like they might require at least a 6" downpipe, but I didn't have my tape measure with me. Does this info help any?

HT80...wow, old unit indeed. I will look up the parts and wheel sizes, and let you know. I don't think that engine made more then 500-600hp if I remember correctly.

It's called 750 HP in our training manuals, but they have been wrong before. All I know is it's a BIG BITCH. I'm not even sure where I can find a downpipe flange that will fit. Any ideas? I think I might be the first one on this forum to step DOWN to a 5". That just sounds all kinds of wrong.

Jose, have you gotten a chance to look anything up yet? I tried looking on the internet myself, but didn't find much. I'm probably dreaming on this little endeavor, but it would be cool if this were to work out. Maybe if it won't spool up with my little LS1, I could just drop in my 482 BBC and see how that goes.

Well, I looked on that website, and I couldn't find my turbo. I even tried the search function. Damn it.

an HT80 can flow enough air on a gas motor to support over 1200hp.

but with a 350-400ci v8, it'll be slow to spool that high.

the problem with most holsets on gas V8, is that they LIKE high pressures.. they're more efficent at pushing volume at high pressure then at lower pressures.. donno how that works, but it fits with everything ive read/seen.

i have a few holsets myself... without getting into it, brand new cummins turbodiesel engines are brought into a local plant a friend works at.. they convert these land diesels for marine use... and replace the holset on the brand new motor with a diffrent one.
they then scrap the turbos.... most of them are FAR too large to keep, but i have a few HX35s, HX40 going on my car, couple 55s, ect.....
