Default Boost on a 427 darton?

Good idea? Bad idea?

a 408 ironblock has it's obvious advantages but displacement can't be argued. Anyone tried a turbo on a sleeved LS1?

I run 11-12 lbs. on a dry sleeved block (4.080 bore). Invisible Sun was doing a thumper turbo on a Darton block but I haven't seen him post in quite awhile. You might think about an LS2 block with a 4.00" crank, then you get a 402. I think that is what TwinTurboCE is running deep 9's with.

Mike is running a stock crank, as parts for the ls2 were expensive he said.

Taking with Steve at RED, I got the impression the Darton sleeves are FAR stronger than the factory sleeves and even a lot stronger than the C5R sleeves and should hold more boost than either. Some of the import guys are running like 40 to 60 psi of boost through Darton sleeves. Obviously we can't do that since we are limited by the 4 bolts per cylinder on our blocks, but it shows that the Darton sleeves are TOUGH.

Keeping the heads down is the problem, not the sleeves. A good thick deck head will help as will APR studs. What's the limit on the amount of boost you can run? I don't know, but I wouldn't think 16 psi would be a problem at all... anything over that you get into that grey area as with any of the LSx blocks.

From what I understand, the wet sleeves are superior to the dry sleeves... the down side is the cost. If you have the money, a LS6 Darton sleeve 427 is a tough combo to beat if you don't want to go with an iron block.

i've heard too many horror stories of dropped sleeves whether dry or wet, i'd go with a tried and true prove engine combo the iron 408 or if you want lighter the aluminum 402.

yoo cant blame a product when its installed or machined incorrectly by shops who lack the knowledge or the correct machines to do the blocks (i.e coolant capabilities)

what Wet1 stated is correct. the import guys with the b16 blocks and nisan guys with the vq35's (350z motors) and viper guys are running boost amounts to put them in the 1000-2000rwhp range.

bottom line is the darton sleeves will handle more then what you can think off. just have the block done by someone who is qualified; Steve is the man. if not, hit up Howard Wolf.

i'd be worried about keeping the heads down and my fuel system before i worried about a darton block.
for an all out boost/n20 motor the wetsleeve is the way to go. for a street/strip motor i'd look into the darton LS2 dry sleeved blocks. it'll run you a couple hundred bucks less. you cant beat an aluminum block with 4.160 capabilities for under 3k.

with the iron blocks your limited to .080 on a rare sonic tested block, .030 for the common 408. the darton sleeves will go 4.160 on both the wet and dry liners. the 4.200 sleeves should be out shortly.

I wouldn't be worried so much about the sleeves as i would the block itself. Yes, i know the aluminum blocks have been taken up high in the HP range but, how many do it over a long period of time without big problems? Some of the issues i've read about are main caps walking, although, this seems to only affect blocks in the 700 + range it still happens. Iron is more rigid and cheaper to buy new. So, why not go with something more economical and stronger as well as what most of the big HP guys use?
