IC plate thickness

IC plate thickness Is there a reason the bars and plates aren't any thinner on intercoolers? Is a certain thickness needed to hold boost?
I remember being told that some of the GM/Pontiac aluminum wheels of the 80's were so porous that they would leak tire pressure through the wheels... people would demount the tire, scuff and paint the inside of the wheel to keep their tires from losing air.
I know aluminum has excellent heat transfer properties and I don't know how much there will be to gain by making the plates thinner.
