Default Got my header flanges

Part of the winter plans include weight reduction.

The turbo kit uses cast manifolds, heavy suckers too

Soooooo

I'm gonna try my hand at some header fab work. Need to order a pair of T3 turbo flanges, a couple 4 into 1's and some stainless bends. Then i cut and weld for awhile.

But, these are GM performance parts flanges for the ASA headers. pretty cheap too, good quality.

I figure if i can cut the weight in half, that's atleast 50 lbs off the front.

Hey Harlan check out this site:

http://www.burnsstainless.com/

They have everything you need to build exhaust or induction parts.

What's the rest of the winter plan?

Harlan, I would TIG weld the flanges to keep down the warpage, after that you can use ox-acetylene or MIG. I have a friend who builds headers for turbo Buicks & thats the method he uses.Hows the stutter box coming.

How much those flanges run you and there a website for them?

If I did a turbo Id make my own manifolds.

Good luck and keep us updated.

Bob

I plan to TIG the whole thing. Along w/ my new radiator, intercooler, etc. over the winter season.

stutter is about ready to send out to the board house for proto 2. New RPM measurement scheme to minimize the required connections, and more filtering. with the hacked up one before i'd get some noise if things weren't "just right" should be good now

Turbo, those are straight outta GM performance parts. #12480130 Cost me $37 for the pair, but my roommate works at the dealership so i got his price. My employee price was a little lower, but i couldn't order them directly. Not stocked at a local warehouse to pick up

but, they were pretty cheap and the dealer can get the for you.

Are you gonna shoot for equal length? That plays a big role in a turbo manifold. With a manifold made of steel tubing you should see better all around performance. Esp the spooling time.

it's gonna be real tough to get them equal. There is very little room as it is. I may just have to go w/ a log style, or maybe a tri-y. But i will attempt 4 into 1.

I figure i can't do any worse flow wise than the cast ones, using 1 3/4" stainless. I'm more after the weight reduction.

when i got it, stage 1, it was $4500. It's now $5500 i think. But good luck getting your hands on one. hard to come by these days.

The kit is VERY complete. I've had to upgrade alot of drivetrain stuff as a result of my boost greed

but the kit itself kicks ***

Will do on the 2-step.

I'm sure you'll see info here too

I have seen good results from ATI, both LS1 and LT1.

How much does it cost anyway?

All i know is stay away from powerdyne, and vortech requires cutting the SS hood.

Vortech seems to do well though

But, ATI was smart and watched as the others found the bugs. and made the correct changes before they released the blower.

i say ask Black LS1 T/A, he seems to be the quick ATI guy round these parts

Thanks Harlan, The reason i might go with ATI is that i would have to trash my $1200 TTS headers to install the turbo. Also i was thinking why not remove the windshield washer an put a front mount after cooler. Bob

Y2KHawk, could you use a normal t3 turbo on each of those manifolds, and build your own kit?

If so, and your sucessful, would you be willing to sell your incon manifolds?

Ryan.

once i get the motor out of the car, and check out the manifolds i'll figure out what size they are. Not sure if it's a t3 flange or a t4, but it's a 4 bolt flange for sure.

I don't see why you couldn't use one of the appropriate size

If all goes well, i may just put them up. I'm replacing the intercoolers as well, and maybe the ducting.

hell, i may end up selling most of it off

Matt, just for the hell of it Patrick just weighed a set of the cast manifolds, 13 #'s and 19 #'s, totalling 32 #'s. We then weighed a set of stainless headers I have from my mustang which were at 11 #'s each, long tube. Now estimating a shorty would weigh approx. 6 #'s which would total 17 #'s for stainless compared to 32 #'s for the cast pieces. 15 #'s is hardly worth the effort when it can be taken out MUCH cheaper from other things on the nose of the car. Holesaw the front bumper and weigh the metal taken out for example. We already know we can make over 800rwhp with these manifolds in stock trim and will be extrude honing a set shortly for an C5R project.
We also know the intercoolers are good for over 700rwhp in their stock locations in both the vette and F-body applications and I should have the 4.5" cores on a few cars shortly. The 4.5's should exceed 900rwhp without a significant pressure drop. Be careful with the front mount and cooling issues as there have been issues when modifying the stock cooling path on both the f-body and C5 even with bigger radiators.

LOL, that was quick tom

32 seems low, but it has been over a year since i've had them off the car.

I don't doubt that they flow, but i'm in serious need of a diet.

The coolers are a different story.

I'm not too concerned w/ the cooling issues, as the stock radiator is being replaced w/ a 2 core of the same size. AC is going bye-bye, so i should have room for the FMIC. And an added bonus is the removal of the *** pipe

Dave continues to assure me the 35's will flow the mass for 800rwhp. So I fully intend to find out

The build up is serious, and i plan to break alot of stuff next year. I really wanna see what i can do w/ 346 cubes, straight C16, and 18 psi
