How long would this bottomend last?
I plan on running 9 psi with a huge intercooler and trying to lower the compression by carving out those heads with a stage I job. With good wide band tuning, how long will this baby last? just lookin at some opinions in keepin the blower
98 Specs out at .009-.015" for the top ring end gap. No problem with the 2nd ring as the ls1 runs a wide 2nd gap to further increase top ring sealing by way of pressure differential.
Great for N.A. ,BUT NOT GREAT FOR ANY POWERADDER.
To much heat and you run the risk of butting the ring, which will take out a land right away, many times the 2nd ring land.
Happened to me on the bottle. With water injection I managed to run 10psi boost for a while with a broken piston until it finally began to degrade to the point I had to tear it down.
Still held 170 psi cranking compression but my plugs told me the game was over.Broken 2nd land and top ring with no tension on tear down.Ran like this for 1 year or about 20 200 shot nitrous runs and about 3 months of 10psi ~550 RWHP .
So you take your chances on a stock shortblock as you never really know what the top ring gaps are set at, as there is a .006" factory tolerance.
My advice is to get your self a good water injection kit if you really want to push the stock shortbolck.
That will keep from over heating any rings with tight gaps and butting.Either that or hope you have a block with loose tolerances <img src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" border="0">
A lot of guys think it's all about detonation Butt(pun intended) it's not.

Should last awhile with proper installation and tuning. Just so you know though, I would start saving for that rebuild.
