Default Building a motor for FI

Hey guys. Well i really want to go FI, but i am sure once i jsut get the kit, i will want to up the boost. And without having to worry about building my stock ls1, i was thinking about jsut building a seperate motor. This could be my winter project and just buy parts for the engine as i bring more money in until it is finished..... Also my dad doesnt want me getting too deep into mods on my ls1 so i figure, if i jsut build my own new engine, im good. What is a good sized block for FI to go with? Im not looking to build the baddest of the bad but i want a nice block that can handle a lot of boost. Think this is a good idea so i dont have a lot of down time on my car now and what not? Also when i get this done, should i drop it in my current car or what? Current car is ws6 with stock 10 bolt and 4l60-e. Id have to then upgrade all my junk but i could sell my stock ls1 to afford the 12 bolt and tranny rebuild.... I really want to go FI but am not sure of the best route for me to take..... Which way would you suggest? Please post up some nice suggestions along with examples and prices if you could? Thanks guys. Or would a better way to be bolt up the D1SC to my car now and run like 8# until i have the money to forge my bottom end or what? Thanks

What do you want to do with your car? Street car? Drag car? Autocross? Do you drive it every day?

Basically: What are your goals?

You don't need to go FI to make some real hp, if you don't have to deal with smog???? You could cam, head, headers, intake the car and make just about the same with less money IMO. I went with FI to make quick hp without having to mod the car so much, but still am going to have to add all these things to maximize my intake flow, your limited on certain upgrades when you go FI. Do some more searches on here and you'll learn more about it. Good luck any which way you go....

If you look around the board the favorite seems to be the 408 iron block built with forged internals. However, there are a bunch of guys running a forged bottoem end 346 with no problems either. If your planning on staying around 500-600 rwho you should probably stay stock CI and just forge your bottom end on your current engine, that would be the most cost effective. If you really just want to start clean with a new block you can buy a 346 forged small block from one of the sponsors for around 2800 (I think rapid motor sports has one?). Then get a set of stage 3 6.0 liter heads, or some afr 225's if you have the cash, then top it off with a custon blower/turbo cam and a fast 90/90 combo. However thats gonna be around 6 grand in engine parts, THEN you have to get the blower or turbo. Id say if your trying to keep your budget down and definately want to go FI then Id get the DS1C 8-rib, and push about 7-8 pounds of boost and save up for a built engine so when your stock one goes you will have the funds to build a new engine. In addition id put money aside for a 12-bolt rear. You can survive on the 10-bolt for a while as long as your not doing hard launches or put sticky tires on. If your pretty conservative when driving and only get on it every once in a while and mostly from a decent speed roll your 10-bolt should last fairly long, but its a gamble either way with that much power and a stock rear. Good luck though and let us know ultimately what you decide on doing!

Alright thanks guys. Well yea the car is daily driver. wont see the strip much, mainly a street warrior. No autocross or anyhting. Just want a lot of power for the street to play with. Also if i went cam ($1000), AFR 205's, ($2300), Fast 90/90 setup ($1200 ish?) so thats $4500 right there and will net me what 420-450 depending on cam size if i go pretty big? Than i have to pay to get all that installed because no way i can put heads/cam on, (Install-$1000) and tune ($500) So thats $6 grand for 425-450 hp. Exhaust will be done before either of these anyway. Or i could go ATI D1SC kit and by itself its what 5-6 grand ish new plus install and tune were looking round $7500 max with 7-9 # boost. That should net me around 500 hp or close with helping mods plus has a ton of room to grow. so for the extra pwoer for the na set up i could add some spray which i dont really want to get into but that would be another $grand ish plus a lot everytime i need to refill which would be a pain. For me being a daily driver i figure building my motor or FIng it will be about same $ for same HP or close. I jsut think the FI will be an easier way for me now with more room to grow down the road as i get more money.

So you guys think the best way right now would be to go d1sc 8-rib at about 8# and wait until i either blow or have sufficient funds to build stock bottom end? Other suggestions and input it greatly appreciated. Yea i know in order to plant this power ill need sticky tires which will blow my rear so ill save for the 12 bolt first........

throw it on and run a safe tune, you should be ok till your ready to boost more.

a4's are easier on the rears so don't stress too much bout that. If you want some extra longevity throw a ta cover on the rear, that'll help, put a tranny cooler on and get a shift kit, this will help your tranny stay cool (the heat kills the tranny) and the shift kit will prevent the bands from wearing out faster. Definitely put in like a 35-3600 stall . Run Nittos in the rear. Add some lca's to catch al little more traction.
That should be good for a while. It'll put a smile on your face. Your car should do 11.40's with ease with a decent 60 foot.
