Default Good Turbo Question's

Turbo Questions:

1. What is the ideal c/r for a turbo?
2. Why is lower compression better for FI- less chance for detonation?
3. On a stock engine, what will 6.0 heads bring the c/r to?
4. Would you lose/gain hp with lower compression/6.0 heads?
5. Would it be worthwhile to upgrade the valve-springs, retainers, and pushrods while you’re changing the heads? What about doing a S2 head with bigger valves? How much power would you gain over a stock 6.0 or 5.7 head with LS1MS turbo kit? (Do they even make a S2 6.0 head?) What about rocker arms? Seems like most people stay at stock redline with FI so would it be beneficial at all to upgrade the valvetrain?
6. How much power are you going to gain with a split duration cam? Would it be worthwhile to change the cam or just better off to stay stock? Would there be more wear and tear from a split cam? What cam would you go with if changing-small or big- 220/224 or more like 227/230?
7. After doing all of this to increase the power even more beyond a turbo install, how is the bottom end going to hold out? Are the pistons, rods, rod bolts up to it? Is it even going to hold up to a stock engine/LS1MS turbo install? Rob’s kit claims 497/628 from basic kit.
8. Before doing heads and cam, would you stay stock and reinforce the bottom end and go to the bigger t-76 turbo? I think it would cost the same with a much greater increase in power.
Thanks for any help. If everybody just picks one question to answer, it will go fast.

Default Re: Good Turbo Question's

1. What is the ideal c/r for a turbo?

Hard question, but in general 9.0:1 - 9.5:1.

2. Why is lower compression better for FI- less chance for detonation?

Detonation will kill a motor quickly with any kind of FI. High cylinder pressure + detonation=Big Boom.

3. On a stock engine, what will 6.0 heads bring the c/r to?

Not sure, but you can do the math easily enough. There are a lot of calculators out there.

It depends on what you're aiming for. This is too big and too vague of a question to really be able to answer. Most turbo guys don't go beyond 6200-6300rpm. With heads/cam/turbo you will make more power if you set it up correctly.

6. How much power are you going to gain with a split duration cam? Would it be worthwhile to change the cam or just better off to stay stock? Would there be more wear and tear from a split cam? What cam would you go with if changing-small or big- 220/224 or more like 227/230?

Once again, too many variables. A turbo cam is typically a single pattern or reverse split pattern on a wide lobe seperation (114+). You're not going to be spinning the engine very high, so keep the duration on the lower end.

If you don't get stupid, it will last for quite a while. Main things to remember are TUNING, TUNING, TUNING. Make sure you have enough fuel supply, keep it on the rich side, watch your guages.
If you're not spinning the engine, the rod bolts are fine. The pistons will be the weak spot.

8. Before doing heads and cam, would you stay stock and reinforce the bottom end and go to the bigger t-76 turbo? I think it would cost the same with a much greater increase in power.

Once again, depends on what you're wanting to do. Bigger isn't always better.
