Default Scavenge pump veterans inside please (again)

Well I took a break on this project due to being busy with other things, but once again I'm trying to get a working oil scavenge pump on my Incon stage 1 SS. I bought a replacement pump for my original from a board member who says it was never used. After hooking it up, it made a very loud noise, which my old one did not make. I let the car run for a minute to see if it would stop but it didn't. I haven't started the car since. I took this replacement pump off and hooked it up to a battery charger, and put one hose into some water: it definitely is pumping, and good volume too. I tried the same thing with the old pump (original problem was just heavy leaking, not failing altogether) and it pumped what looked like the same amount of water, but was quite a bit quieter.

My question is this: those of you with scavenge pumps, how loud are they? I think anyone standing next to my car would ask what that noise is...that's how loud this one is. If that's unusual like I think it is, I don't want to run it on the car and risk it failing.

Is there a company (or an individual for that matter) who will look over these Tilton pumps? I can take it apart easy enough, but I don't know what to look for once inside there. I'd like some peace of mind from someone who has seen these things and knows what it should sound like and what it should look like inside. As a last resort, can anyone tell me where to get a brand new one?

TIA...
-Ty

I guess its all in what you consider to be loud.

My pump does change in volume sometimes. Usually starting on a cold (below 40 deg.) morning, it is quite a bit louder than it gets after a minute or two.

Normally, as heard outside the car, its about as loud as my old Holley (blue) electric fuel pump that I had on a '70 Challenger mounted near the tank. A lay-person would probably notice the noise, but also would probably not attribute it to anything serious. Anyone who knows would think its an external in-line fuel pump.

I don't want to give bad advice, but I'd put it on. It sounds like its working properly, and like mine, could get quieter. The worst that can happen is that it would fail, and you would see the smoke from your exhaust long before you would do any damage to the car. As far as the cost of the pump, if its bad, its bad. If its good, its good, and you putting it on the car will not change things.

That's my great concern is that it would fail...and I did see the smoke with my original pump and it is in fact still pumping. But if there will always be that clear warning sign then I say what can it hurt? If anyone else thinks differently let me know...otherwise I am going out to put that thing back on.

Thanks.

You only saw a trickle of smoke before because yours only leaked, and did not fail. When it fails, you will see smoke from sidewalk to sidewalk in your rearview coincident with any sort of throttle application.

Its only the exhaust. Worst that could happen is that you crud up the O2 sensors, and that will set an SES light, so you'll know. I've driven my car for a total of 5 miles in that condition, and still have the original O2 sensors. As long as you test drive close to home, you'll be OK.

Also, realise that it takes quite a while to clear out once the pump is working. You'll probably see smoke under half throttle for the next 20 times of so, but it will diminish each time.

My weldon seems to be working fine. Although I only have a few hours of run time on it. You probably aren't going to see much when you break into the tilton, unless its already broken. Thats just the design. On the diagphram part you may be able to see some wear marks or small surface cracks before it breaks. If your going to keep using the pump just replace the diagphram every month or two or more often if you run it for long periods of time. I still have my tilton pump works fine as a water pump for a pond, just not something as critical as a oil return.

And if the pump were to fail and you were out in the middle of no were you could definetly fry the turbos, and the motor if you did not stop soon enough.
