Default Driving to the track under boost....Got a ???

I don't have a truck or a trailor to put my car on to take it to the track with...I will be wanting to take my car to the track this spring/summer/fall to get some #'s on it...

I drive my car everyday when its nice out, and when I do go to the track I drive it there...

TH400 w/3.73's = 3000rpms @ 60-65mph

How much stress would I be putting on the motor driving it 100 miles to a track and then beating on it all day, and then driving in 100 miles back...

How much boost would I be seeing at 3000rpms do you think?

Thanks,
Bos

you will only have boost under load, so if your cruising you shouldnt be making any.

3rd gear on the highway tends to be under load, all I have to do is tap the gas and it will be under load...

I could run mine up to 4500 I think without it showing any boost as long as i wasn't really pressing down on the gas pedal very hard. I think you will be fine. I drove mine from Steele (120+ miles) with a broken ringland and once with an injector stuck open.

Thats where the 4l80 tranny shines. OD is nice sometimes for those long road trips. If I ever go to auto on my TA, thats what I'm doing.

Your engine should be fine. I drove my big block 496 from Denver to Moab with no OD and I was running 3500 rpms all the way there and back with a super loud exhaust. Thats 364 miles one way! It was all good but I'm now installing a 4L80.

Yea, I've been to the track like 5-6 times now driving with the TH400, my exhaust is kind of quiet so its not bad, all I do is turn the music up..

You should be fine if you can keep it at only 3000.
Although, I have a rule about toys....Never play in what gets you there! (This has saved me alot of grief and took some grief to learn).

Personally, I would not drive a 500rwhp+ stock shortblock LS1 to and from the track with a day of racing in between.

100 mile tow will cost you about 400 bucks. Plus a couple of hours waiting for the tow vehicle.

Driving it would be fine. I put a TH350 in my '82 Trans Am.

What I'd worry about is what you will do if you break something 100 miles away from home.

I hauled my car to the track back when it was a lid and exhaust only car, just peace of mind. Well, and maybe because I already had the trailer and tow vehicle for other uses. Buying one strictly for hauling the car would be a tough call. The thing I'm more worried about now is if you break something big out there (tranny, motor, rearend), how are you supposed to get it back on the trailer? I know some of you guys must know a way...

Me and my bro-in-law got to know "Bob" of "Bobs" towing service pretty well after our nights at the strip years ago.
yep, got to see his service garage one time and another even stopped by his home so he could show us his cars. Bob had some nice rides tucked away!
Ah hell, we just liked having him give us a ride home after a fun night at the strip is all.
Hell yeah, it only cost us about 175$ for a first class ride home, so we did it often!
Yeah the 3 of us riding shotgun in Bob's Flatbed with Bob slowly drifting off into dreamland and shutting his eyes at 70mph in his flatbed on the highway....ah yeah...good times.
Yeah but it did give us that much needed shot of adrenaline bless his heart!
Then around 2 am the familiar sound of the chains rattling and clanking and the hoist lowering the car off his flatbed probably gave my neighbors a warm fuzzy feeling all over.
I miss those days
But that was nothing compared to fun my Bro had when driving home with a quarter sized hole in a piston.
yeah we decided not to take Bob's limo home that day.
Instead we pulled the plug wire and added a quart of oil every 15 mins or so as the motor pumped raw oil out the holed piston into the blazing hot headers.
I followed him in my car laughing in hysteria as I have NEVER seen such a smoke show in my life.
fun times, dumb times.

The only thing I would be really worried about breaking out at the track would be the motor, popping a head gasket, maybe something worse...

My driveline is solid...

are you running a turbo or a blower?
If blower you will be under boost at 3000rpm. How much depends on your pulley size, intake airflow restrictions and some other things.

Great post SJH!!!!

I once drove home with a blown head gasket, I had to add 1/2 a gallon of water every time I slowed down for a toll.

John does trailer his car now in case there was any confusion.

I'll hit you up bill..

Yes it is a blower setup, and I guess I can keep it under 3000 on the highway..
