Default Advantages and Disadvantages of a Cogged Drive Blower

Belt slippage seems to be a problem when running a high hp blower setup. The cogged drive seems like the way to go.

Is there any disadvantages with the cogged drive besides costs? I have heard that belt drives is more forgiving on the engine with the slip. Any truth to this?

I've always heard that its better to run a cog when you start to play with high HP applications..

I will most likely need to switch over to one when I build a motor later on...

I really wouldn't feel comfortable tighting the belts down to high hell just to get some extra PSI at the top end...

But the cog setup is 1500 bucks....

I know cars that are running20+lbs on a ribbed belt. The ribs are ALOT more forgiving than the cogs. When you do step up to the cogs be sure to have enough blowoff valve to handle the big boost . With my setup the blower is pushing about 1500cfm at WOT .When you back off thats is alot of air to bleed off before you bend throttle blades or or back feed the blower. Which is very expensive ,Iknow it happened to me . The Mondo bov is only good for approximatly 650cfm. Ifound out the hard way.I now run 2 Mondo's and havent had a problem since . IMO you really dont need the cogs below 20 lbs .What you want is the absolute largest diameter crank pulley and blower pulley to achieve the best belt rap(surface contact)and you will have no problem running alot of boost .Good luck with whatever you choose.

Damn the cog setup is a lot of money. And if you dont do it right it will end up costing you more money when you break something. It doesnt sound like the cogs work well with a manual trans, with all the throttle changes during shifting.

Switching to an 8-rib pulley setup and/or positioning idlers to improve belt wrap would help. But converting all of the accessories to 8-rib is probably just as pricey.

Maybe you could customize a secondary crank pulley cap that is cogged straight to the blower and leave the accessories and stock accessory 6-rib alone. Vortech should have plenty of cog SC drive pulleys on hand. Then you only have to customize 1 piece.
