Default Vortech + Heads & Cam Update

Finally took the car to Heffner's to get it dynoed and tuned tonight.
It put down 473RWHP@6200RPM.
However, at exactly 6200RPM, the stock fuel pump maxed out, and we lost fuel pressure. We'll have to install a high flow In-Tank fuel pump to finish tuning the car. Even with the T-Rex in-line pump, the stock fuel pump is maxed out at 6200RPM. Nothing else we can do until we get a new In-Tank. Once we do that, we can rev up to 6800RPM, and pick up the rest of the horsepower (25-35 horses).

For now, we'll leave the 3.125" (8PSI) pulley on (~500RWHP). When we rebuild the motor, well drop in the 2.75" pulley for another 5PSI of boost.

Thanks to Brian "Evil" Rice for the help with the tuning. Can't wait to finish up once we get the new pump.

4/12/03 Note: New numbers --> 536RWHP/473RWTQ !!

Are you using stock compression? And stock internals?

For now, yes. But if/when the bottom end goes south, there's a local machine shop that can get me a forged 346ci for $4000 installed ($4500 installed if I actually lose the block itself). Then I'll be able to run 10-12PSI, instead of 7. Right now I'm just saving my pennies for that fateful day.

Congrats Crunch,

You've got a wild setup bro. Can't wait to see it, and really can't wait to run it

Me and some of the EFA guys are hitting Midnight Madness at MIR on Friday. If you have the time bring that beast out. I promise not to egg you on for a race, as my blower isn't on yet. E-mail me if you're interested in crusing down with us.

Latedr bro, can't wait to see the final numbers on that monster.

Congrats,
Mike

Crunch. I'm pretty sure you are not maxing out your fuel system. It has plenty left in it, unless you have a problem. I'm making 100 more horsepower then you on the stock pump and the t-rex. I'm running the 2.75" pulley. And I'm running very rich(9:1) due to tunning. I'm also spinning to 7100 rpms. You might be out flowing the 38 pound injectors, but not likely. I made 470 RWHP on the 38 lb injectors with out a problem.

Sounds like you have some type of problem. Are you having it tunned. You might need to increase your injector pulse width.

Just trying to help you.

The monitoring program that Brian "Evil" Rice was using is called "EFI Live". It didn't have an option to monitor the injector pulse width (we looked for that). But we figured that didn't matter, because the fuel PRESSURE dropped by over 10 pounds once we hit 6200RPM. If there was a problem with the injectors, and not the pump, then the pressure should have remained constant (62PSI), right? There wasn't any point in continuing to rev the engine up on the dyno past that point. Anyway, I'm no engine tuner, but the consensus of Jason (F-Body Central) and Brian was to upgrade the fuel pump. If after the fuel pump install we still see the same problem, well, that would suck, wouldn't it.

BTW, the car is in the shop now for the fuel pump, 5-point harness, and a few touch-up issues (grinding calipers, fix boost gauges, etc.)
So the car ain't going anywhere just yet. But when its ready, you'll know.

I'll keep y'all posted.

I got the fuel pump. It's being installed now (along with the 5-point harness). Should have some new dyno numbers next week.

We dynoed the car with the new Walboro in-tank fuel pump. That seemed to do the trick!
The final numbers are 536RWHP / 473RWTQ.
536HP@6600RPM
473TQ@5000RPM
The boost gauge showed 8lbs at 6600RPM.
This with the 3.125" pulley.
When the stock bottom end goes, we'll drop in forged internals and change over to the 2.75" (13lbs) pulley.
I'm very satisfied with the dyno results.
Now lets put down some timeslips!

But to make the long story short, I wasn't sure if I was going to do nitrous or a blower, so I went with a "normal" heads & cam package that would give great N/A power, but I could still stick on a blower down the road. It turns out that we put the blower on almost immediately, so now I wish I had went with the blower cam. But at this point, I'm not pulling apart the motor again, unless something goes wrong.
The heads are 5.7L 10.1:1 compression.

how come your spinning to such a high rpm? i thought one of the good things with a s/c is that you dont have to do that to make power? why no get a pully that puts out 8 (or 13) lbs at like 5-6,000 rpm? also did you upgrade your valvetrain or anything? i hear anything over 6,300 rpm is past the stocker limit

Default Re: Vortech + Heads & Cam Update

The valvetrain has been completely redone with performance parts (springs, pushrods, etc.) to compensate for the aggressive camshaft. This was done at the same time the heads & cam package was installed. The power band for my camshaft peaks at just over 6600RPMs, which is where I shift gears.

I will change to the smallest available supercharger pulley (2.75" 13PSI) when the bottom end of the LS1 motor is rebuilt. At 6600 engine RPMs, this will spin the Vortech V9 impeller to 66,000RPMs, which is right about at the maximum impeller speed. Thus, I'll get the maximum CFM airflow of the supercharger, and get the maximum horsepower from the aggressive camshaft.
