Default Crank pulley bolt removal?

What is the best way to do this? I dont want to take the ATI fan out to get an impact gun in there but will if I absolutely have to. I tried using a 2 foot breaker bar and no luck. Is this a reverse thread? I tried both ways. That thing is insanely tight. When I put my kit in one of my buddys did that part when I was at work cuz I couldnt get it. I think he used a breaker bar but I dont see how. If anybody has any suggestions that would be cool. I'm going to go try it again but doubt I will have any luck. Thanks.

I wrote this after fighting with my crank bolt. Hope it helps:
________________________________________________

Autozone has two different size gear pullers you can borrow. Use the smaller size 3 jaw puller for the crank pulley. Also, you will need a longer crank bolt. The bolt you need is a 16mm / 2.0 thread pitch and 120mm in length (the head of this bolt is 24mm). This bolt can be purchased from NAPA as P/N 2801-225. Price is $5.39. Also purchase 2 washers P/N 8071-035B. Aditionally, if you don’t have a 24mm 6 point ½” drive socket; go buy one. DON’T use a 12 point socket. It does not grab enough meat on the bolt head, and may round off the head as you are trying to remove the ‘Super Tight’ crank bolt.

If this happens; YOU WILL have more problems than you would ever want to deal with!!!

Sears sells this socket in a deep-well version made for an impact wrench. This is the best one to get. The impact socket is much stronger than a regular socket and will not distort.

On an A4 car, remove the 2 bolts that hold up the starter. Let the starter just hang by it’s wires. Put a steel pin such as a large allen wrench in one of the holes in the flex plate (flywheel). Turn the engine with your ½ inch drive breaker bar attached to the 24mm ½” drive socket until the engine stops turning do the to pin hitting up against the block. You will need about a 2 foot piece of pipe [and] your long ½” drive breaker bar to loosen the pulley bolt. In fact, I had to use both feet to loosen the bolt!

Once the bolt breaks loose, install the puller. As you use the puller, you will need to unscrew the crank bolt when the pulley hits up against it. Keep doing this until there are not enough threads left on the stock bolt to pull the pulley all the way off. Then install your longer NAPA bolt and pull the pulley the rest of the way off.

You will also need this longer bolt to start pushing the pulley back on the crank during re-assembly. The stock bolt is just not long enough, and banging on the pulley to start it on the crank is NOT the answer.

I used about an 18 inch half inch drive wrench and a 4 foot piece of pipe, came right off. I only mucked around with this for a few minutes, getting that damn pulley off was another story. When you get the crank bolt loose, drill a small pilot hole 1/4 inch wide by a 1/4 inch deep in the middles of the crank bolt to help give a place for the pulley puller to dig in. I broke two of them trying to do it without doing this....

Here was my way:

Materials:

1 breaker bar
24mm impact socket
1 floor jack bar

Place the 24mm socket on the bolt. Attach the breaker bar to the socket. Place jack bar over the end of the breaker bar. Now make sure the end of the jack bar is braced against the floor on the left hand side of the vehicle. (When looking at the vehicle from the front. double check this though it could cause a lot of dammage if I am incorrect.) Then pull your plug wires or pcm. Crank the car and use the starter to loosen the bolt. You should be able to get it that way. I tried every other way and nothing worked. I asked a local mechanic and this did the trick.

Sincerely

Thanks for the replys guys. Badz2801: Is the crank bolt a reverse thread? If not I would think the bar would have to be against the ground on the driver side which would be the right side when looking at the front of the car. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong cuz I'm gonna try this tonight. Thanks!

Thanks badz2801. I just did your little trick and it worked perfectly. That was a damn good idea! Now I just need a 43" belt and I'm ready to rock. <img border="0" alt="[driving]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_driving3.gif" />
