Default MAP Sensor Question

It was recommended to me to install a supercharged Cobalt MAP sensor on my 02 SS STS turbo car.Could somebody explain to me the function of this Cobalt MAP sensor vs. the stock sensor and what is the function of a MAP sensor. When I took my car to the dyno to be tuned the car toasted a ring lan and the tuner said it showed the knock retard came on.Could this Cobalt MAP sensor have caused the car to detonate and destroy the ring lan or is the MAP sensor irrelevant to detonation.Should I keep the Cobalt sensor when I repair the engine or would the stock sensor be a better idea.

Is your PCM set up for the 2 bar map sensor? Did you actually get a 2 or 3 bar OS from HPT or efilive or did you just swap it in and run it?

Your PCM has to be set up for a 2 or 3 bar map sensor to run one.

The MAP sensor allows the car to read airflow/boost and add fuel accordingly.

The stock MAP sensor cannot read positive manifold pressure(boost)

Thats the quick and dirty explanation.

Default MAP Sensor

Just swapped the MAP sensor in and ran it with nothing done to the computer(PCM).I do not know if it was a 2 bar or 3 bar.I asked the tuner if he was going to do a speed density tune and he said no.Do you think the MAP sensor could have made the engine detonate because it is not in synch with the computer.I have meth on the car and it was spraying so I believe it was getting the fuel it needed.

The cobalt map sensor is 2 bar. I'm running the same one in my car, but I have a custom 2 bar OS loaded into my PCM.

It could have been the reason for detonation...but you can also have run too much timing and or boost and toasted pistons that way. If you had your meth on and pumping I'd doubt the car went lean, but its hard to say.

What tuning software do you have? Horsepower tuners or efilive. IF you have one of these, get the 2-3 bar OS upgrades that they offer.

Default MAP Sensor

The tuner was using HP tuners so I assume he had the 2 bar tuner plugged into my computer. The A/F was 10.2 and the timing was at 12 degrees.

Most of the 3-pin GM MAP sensors will measure boost up until about 6lbs. Remember that a tuned intake/exhaust motor can generate pressure waves that drive positive manifold pressure, so the MAPs have to deal with that.

Anything over 6lbs you'll need a 2-bar sensor. Anything over 14.7lbs. of boost and you'll need a 3-bar MAP.

Some tuning SW will not allow you to access cells for positive manifolds pressure w/o the right MAP.
