Default Supercharged Ls1 Help

I'm in the process of convincing myself to do an LS1 swap in my '68 Camaro and would like to, eventually, put a supercharger on it if I do the conversion. My thoughts are to buy a used LS1/T56 combo for the conversion. My question is do I need to do anything special to the internals of the motor in order to run a supercharger later? I would like to obtain 450-500 hp. Please advise.

Thanks,
Chris

Motor handles 450-500 Hp pretty easily with a proper tune. Add rod bolts and forged pistons for extra peice of mind.

It will make your life a little easier if you start with a 99 - up drivetrain for your '68. The computer for the '98 is different, plus the heads use a perimeter style pattern for the valvecovers, and the coil brackets are different.
For the power level you are looking for, 8 psi of ProCharger boost and stock internals in the engine will be just fine. That '68 will fly!!! Bob

Since you've got the engine out I would at least put in forged pistons. That buys you a lot of insurance.

Thanks guys. I was definitely planning on puting another cam in the motor before I installed it in the car. If 450-500 hp is achievable w/out a supercharger, I would like to try without first. What kind of motor mods should I do to get in this range? Like I said, I was planning on a new cam anyway (something with a little bump!...since this car is from the vintage era). Give me some recommendations on something that won't make the computer go crazy everytime I start it up.

Thanks,
Chris

Here is one route you could take.
Starting with a LS2 engine will give you a larger cubic inch displacement, and a stronger block, due to the siameized cylinder bores. Add a 4.00" stroker crank and you will have a 402. We use the Callies Racemaster crankshafts on a lot of our builds, along with Callies compstar connecting rods, and Diamond pistons. I'd shoot for a compression ratio in the 10.0/1 range, which will allow you to add an ATI ProCharger with 12 lbs + of boost in the future, if you choose to.
You will need an aggressive camshaft for the power that you are looking for. Something along the lines of the T Rex camshaft. It will have to be a thumper to make the power N/A, but with good tuning it will idle good.
Cylinder heads will make all the difference in the world. I'd go with a pair of AFR 225's, or something similiar in flow.
I'd use a FAST 90mm intake and a Nick Williams 90mm throttle body. Bob

bob, what do you think is the most you could get out of a 402 on good pump fuel N/A?

doesn't have to be that torque, just good power!

i habe seen 377ci small bolcks making around 700bhp! is this doable?

Chris.

I've seen 382's make just under 500 rwhp on my Mustang Chassis Dyno, so it is feasible to imagine that a well prepped 402 could make 525 to 550 rwhp, which would be up there in horsepower at the engine. Bob

450-500 flywheel hp is plenty achievable with ANY type of forced induction with very safe boost levels on a stock engine. 6-7 psi. Here's the stickler, you'll want more power after a while.

ultimately you are ruled by your wallet.

1st gens with LS1 motor/drivetrain are the best of both worlds.
