Best Setup for Reliable 600hp Near Stock LS1?
I am looking to build a 600hp LS1. The engine is currently all stock. What is the best way to get too this goal?
I was thinking twin GT3076R turbos, but after my other post I am re-thinking that choice. I wanted to build an entirely new engine from scratch, but that bill quickly added up to over $12,000 in parts (not including the turbos.) Ouch!
My goals are as follows:
1. 600 (+/-) hp
2. Reliable
3. Used for Street/Strip
4. Daily driver
There aren't any kits I can use because this LS1 is going in a 3rd gen camaro. Suggestions? Should I stick to a single turbo or go for the twin? What other upgrades from a stock LS1 are needed to obtain this?

thats prety much what i was thinkin and doin now..im prob going ot get a round 600 flywheel hp and just have a T70 and 6.0 heads,srpings/push rods and feul system.. u could do 6.0 heads and an ls6 cam they work preaty good with forced induction, staying with the stock short block...u dont realy needa 76 unless u plan on upgraging later later on soon but a T70 should get around 700-750 to the wheels with a 346ci.

If you want 600hp at the engine, that can be accomplished these days without getting into forced induction. With the big stroker combinations coming out, along with awesome breathing heads, 600hp is attainable.
An ATI ProCharger in your 3rd gen would also be an easy way to get the power. Bob

Am i misled? but 600 hp with a turbo on your stock bottom end is on bought time correct? I was aware that with a FI setup, its all i nthe tune but once you start pushing 550 hp, your asking for trouble on stock bottom end. I think head/cam nitrous is probably a better route for you or lower your goals to 500 ish for now until you can forge your block or buy a motor and you can up the boost and be endless to hp. well not endless, but definately wayyyy more than enough for the street.

I think he is talking about building an engine. It depends on whether he wants 600hp at the engine or at the tires on whether the engine needs to be forged. 500rwhp can be reliable with a fat tune with an ATI ProCharger, giving the hp at the engine approx 600. Bob

Yep, i thought he was talking about 600 RWHP and by stock ls1 he meant stock bottom end. Thanks for clarifying Bob, listen to this man. He knows his stuff. Im just a FI dreamer, haha.

If I did go with a single turbo (like the T70) would the stock top end handle 600hp? Or would I need to upgrade heads/injectors/etc...
Edit - Forgot to add that yes I am building the engine. The old 1986 5.0L TPI will soon be replaced by a real engine!

I have read a ls1 crank is good for 800 plus but the weak points in a ls1 are the pistons and rods 550 would be pushing it i guess But if you are on a budget i will upgade the rods and pistons for added insurance a good brand hell its so many get with some of the engine builders they will point you in a direction ls1/6 are some good motors i made 523 to the ground with a stock 10 bolt with 8psi thats about 600 at the fly good luck hope this helps

You don't necessarily need FI to get the 600HP that you want. N20 is way cheaper and very effective, when used correctly. I think that you coud easily obtain 600 horses with heads, mild cam, headers/catback and a little bit of nitrous. Check out TNT F2 nitrous kit.

Not sure if you're planning on building your own engine or not, but if this isn't your daily driver and you can afford some downtime, I'd suggest just buying a used engine and sending the shortblock to Erik at HPE for machine work, forged pistons and forged rods with your stock crank. That's what I did... the price was right and he really seems to know his stuff. You can still use the stock heads, all the sensors, ignition, electronics and everything for your turbo setup. The forged pistons will give you the ability to run a more aggressive yet safer tune, and the forged rods will help push your RPM limit a little higher.

I don't want to do NOS. I want to do a mild turbo setup. Part for learning and part cuz I love them!
So, from what I have read, with a stock engine all I should do is get forged pistons/rods? Everything else can remain stock??
With a turbo, would I need to drop the compression? Which turbo would work best for my goals?

Dropping your compression will help you get more safe power. Seems like most guys that are building GenIII turbo engines are running between 8.5:1 and 9.5:1.
I think upgrading the valvetrain with hardened pushrods and beefier springs are also recommended to fight valve float.

I do agree on the tune issue and the way people drive their car and take care of it plays a large factor when my pistons went i was running 93 from racetrack it detanated at 1/8 mile mark and all type of bad stuff happen fuel pressure was good 42#injectors 30,000 mile ls6 and she went on a bad tank of gas yeah 15 dollars cost me 6,000 dollars but a 427 is alot better!!

I made 516rwhp through a turbo 350, 3200 converter, stock 3:23's, cam only on 150hp N20 with 10 degree's of timing pulled on pump gas. I also ran another 100-150hp on top of that, never once broke still runnin to this day.

the cheapest and easyest way is prob just a nice cam and spray like spun03cobra said...i had similar goals as u and went turbo, and realizing its more than it seems and not just the get the kit and put it in parts do add up haha it sux...so prob a nice cam with good lope nitrous valve spring/pushrods 42lb inj. pump headers 4in. exhaust, wich i have and like and just a good tune. you'll prob want to get a dual stage kit will work good at the strip less chance of dreaking under hard no2 launche's..
