Its best for a automatic race trans to do your burnout in the 1-1 gear right from the start. Although like Kevin said, without help its hard to get the tire spinning if your not in water.
At least ending the burnout in high gear and easing off the gas as the tires are hooking will give you a good chance of a long trans life. The 3rd to 2nd wot downshifts are very hard on a 400 sprag, but they feel killer.

whoops looks like i'm gonna quit doing all that **** to my 400 this year now lol. i had no idea. i always shifted 1-2 in the box and came out of the box in 2nd and 3-2 downshifts happen about everytime my car is out on the street

i always have people with me putting me in the box and lining me up int he groove tho so i can start in a higher gear for the burnout, Kev don't you have anyone that comes with you when you race??

glad it was something cheap/simple. at lease for u anyway since u can fix it yourself.

Well it lasted quite a while so I wouldnt get too worried, I beat on mine pretty hard but I can fix what I break usually, just something to remember when doing them pro mod burnouts..

Sometimes people go with me but I'd rather have them video.

Back running again, trans feels OK but I had to use some questionable used parts since the place I ordered the new stuff from didnt ship the parts in time to get them this week

Hitting the track tomorrow, hopefully with 2nd gear this time

This is what my trans looked like friday morning, decided to whip it back together using some old parts laying here so I can run this weekend, might last one pass, might last a year lol.

just a local 1/8 mile track, 411 dragway. Just going to make a couple passes and if everything is OK I'll probably hit BG next friday.

I always shift 1-2-3 (then let off the LL)in the burnout, my trans usually lasts 250 passes before rebuild.

Good luck this weekend KP.

I had the same question on the burn out. My TH-400 sprag is the "up-graded" one. Was told by the builder: start in 1st, shift quickly into 2nd, and than release LL and roll out. I never down shift while rolling after the burn-out - I stop and than down shift into 1st. I usually roast the **** out of the tires in 2nd. Is this right or wrong?

Must be nice to work on your own tranny.

if you cant rebuild a TH400 you shouldnt be working on a race car Seriously except for a couple C-clamps, dial indicator, feeler gauges and a vise you need no special tools - only thing simpler is a powerglide.

As far as i know coming out of the water in 2nd and the car hooking up with a manual valve body (no intermediate band) is the worst thing you can do. I had the 34 element sprag but bot the inner and outer race were cracked so who knows what failed first. Best fix is an aluminum direct drum, I'm going to build me a nice trans and use this one as a spare..

Got a new best today, I'll post up after I get the videos to the computer, check the DA and look over the logs.
