Default What are 4l60-e guys doing running turbo's?

Hey guys... figured i'd get the response im looking for better in here since its in regards to guys with turbos.... im looking at adding the sts kit this winter and worried my tranny wont hold with ~500 rwhp. What parts of the trans do you guys feel needs to be built to with stand the turbo power.... im looking for answers reguarding 4l60-e, not swapping out trannies, just what are you guys beefing up? Thanks!

I dont have a turbo, but I do have a Pro Charger so the same rules apply. I had to upgrade the whole 4L60 E so it would with stand the power. The stock trans will hold up for a little while, but not long. I blew mine up within a few hundred miles after my Chargr install.
I have since spent $2000 on replacing and upgrading all the hardware in the trans and it has been a champ for 2 years with no problems.

beef up the clutches, bands, and servo. plenty of sponsors here that build strong 60e's.

I need to get mine done soon i know its only a matter of time, but damn it sure is hard to keep my foot out of it.

Bite the bullet and spend $2,000 on a built RPM 4L60-E. There are a number of folks running 9's with those..

I would stick to someone who has experience building these tranny's. Better to go with whats proven, cost you less in the end.

well this guy has been building trannies for years... How is it different from the sponsors if he uses the same parts? Just trying to get a feel of exactly what in there i should build. Thanks!

I bought the rebuild kit from TCI and had it installed. Mine's not a DD, but I've had no problems with it. If you have someone to rebuild it that would probably be the way to go. Do you have a stall? You want to do that at the same time.

There are a lot of little tricks to keep those tranies alive. If you think you can build a trans as good by buying a few hardened parts I wish you the best of luck.

If you are having to tell him what to put in it or do to it chances are it will not last long enough to make it worth the money.

come on, cut superman a break...he is in the same boat i am. Not everyone has the money to have their tranny sent off to a shop to build it. I think he would prolly save a dime or two letting his uncle do the rebuild. Just hook him up with the info about which hard parts and such he should/could buy.

Noo you guys have this wrong, this is not just some random guy that can wrench throwing in some parts. He has built trannies all his life as a side job apart from GM. He has built trannies for cars 3 years ago that are still running 8's. This guy knows his stuff about trannies and also rebuilt his nephews T-56 and his is running perfect. Im sure he knows what to do for the rebuild but he can rebuild it so many ways jsut like our sponsors... level 1-5, etc using certain parts and what not.... just curious as to which parts really need the most attention so i can make sure they all get done.

There are alot of people that have tried this route only to find out the hard way, that are many little tricks in putting a 4l60e to make it last. If you don't have the money to do it right the 1st time than save until you do. Otherwise you will be spending your hard earned money twice. Superman if your friend knows his stuff than tell him to build the tranny as strong as possible. Good luck.

Wait, 9s?? Are we talking about full weight cars? Corvettes or F-bodies?? For two-grand??

Man I have been really torn up as of late over moving to a th400... For the casual reading I had done over the 4l60e, I had come to the conclusion that by high tens, the best of them wouldn't hold up for but so long. I priced out the built and stalled 4l80s and said no way... Who do you know that builds a good 4l60e for an engine that ought to put down 700-750 RWHP (dynojet) if it were an M6 for a full weight car? Thanks.

How is it different from the sponsors if he uses the same parts?
FLT performance pump
Cryogenically treated FLT sleeved input drum
Cryogenically treated input sprag races
Cryogenically treated low roller race
Cryogenically treated bearing style reaction shaft
Cryogenically treated output shaft
GM 5 pinion planets front and rear
Wide 2-4 band
8 B/W high-energy clutches in 3-4 pack
FLT beast shell w/bearing
B/W 29 element sprag
4L65 low roller clutch
Transgo HD-2 shift kit
Corvette Servo
Bushing kit
All solenoids
Internal wire harness
Spacer plate
B/W clutches
Seal & gasket kit
Filter
Updated accumulator pistons
Set end play to performance specs
Deep GM pan (n/a C-5 corvette model)
Sonnax super hold 4th gear servo

Might be a bit hard trying to locate all the aftermarket and custom parts they use. The above are the parts in the FLT level 5 trans. I had a FLP Level 4 in the past, held up nicely for the short time that I had it, but switched it over to a TH400.

If he is so good, and been doing it so long on high hp trans, then shouldn't he already know what parts it takes to handle the high horse power motors? I'm not trying to knock you guy, but he should know this stuff already.
