It makes me a lot more confident to see others running the same, if not higher temps while racing than myself.

That said, when my car is stationary, my cooling system cannot keep temps under control, even though they havent reached the temperatures some of you guys see.

My temp slowly climbs from around 180-190 degF when on the move, to around 220degF.
Normally if I seen that sort of temp, I'd switch off and allow it to cool before going any further for fear of causing damage.

But either way, the fact my fan/rad combo cannot prevent temps rising, means it needs looked at.
I'm using a single 16" puller rated at something like 2400cfm. I had wanted the 16" 3000cfm model, but sometimes you just dont get what you ask for

I log every pass and having a 98 I have a 'real' temp gauge. Its not accurate but I know right where 200 degrees is.

A lot of it has to do with where the temp gauge is on the engine also, where its at on an LS1 is the hottest spot where the coolent exits the engine, on my old iron block n/a car I had a mechanical water temp gauge hooked to the top of the water pump (inlet side) and it showed a good 20 degrees cooler then the sender on the LH cylinder head.

I dont know about the auto guys but i can speak for an M6 car living in hot weather....run straight water and a bottle of water wetter.Ive got the dual 12" FAL pushers and a single 12" puller and a BMR radiator shroud.I also made sure to keep the bottom air dam on the car.During highway and cruising the car stays @ ~185.If i do a pull itll go to 190-195.Itll only go over 200 if im sitting in traffic or with the ac on...and those temps are using a scan gauge not the factory gauge.

is it true that running pure water will cool the car better than a water/coolant mix? i thought this was true, because coolant is really just so that it doesnt freeze in the winter. any word on this? id love to rid my car of coolant and run straight water/water wetter as mentioned above.

you dont need coolant in your car unless you live where the temps get freezing, and even then you could just swap back to coolant for winter. It says on the bottle of WW that the best cooling is straight water with a bottle of WW.

You don't want to run straight water because it is corrosive. Water wetter + water is the best bet. Just make sure to put a 50/50 coolant mix in when you store it for the winter.

Coolant/antifreeze is also a corrosion inhibitor.

So for long term usage, you should run some at least, although 50/50 would only be if you were expecting some extreme freezing temps.

My SS stays at about 170, cruising, day/night. Over the weekend a "little" cruise 1 1/2 hours in lanes at the Car Craft show, between the fan and radiator, never seen about 170 . Bigger is better in this case.

Thumbs up

My car runs pretty cool. But I certainly don't drive it when it's 95 degrees with the A/C on in stop and go traffic. If it's that hot, I'm on Lake Michigan jet skiing. Evans Cooling is suppossed to be the cat's meow. I'd love to try it to lower the temps a little bit, but it's around $30 a gallon.

I do

Just recently when it was 95+ my car would run 185/190 on the highway and 205/210 in heavy traffic.

EESH man, thats gettin up there, better watch that ****. I'm kind of glad my **** is blown up, I couldn't imagine runnin around in this heat! How do you like the TH400 vs the t56? Do anything else to the car or leaving it as is? I would be pretty happy with it just the way you are for the most part, just get the right lug nuts on a good set of slicks and get it down the track! =)

What a trip. I just posted something like this on the local LS1 board... nice to see other input too.

Heres my post cut-n-paste from the other board.

---------------------------------

With this insane heat wave I was wondering about this after taking the SS out. I specifically took it out to see what would happen in 105-109* weather. I was a little worried but seems it was ok.

How hot is your F-body running in this heat? Also, is it affecting your oil pressures?

With the A/C on MAX cold.. even with the FMIC blocking the radiator, SC, and aftermarket fans (which Im not convinced are better then stock) I was seeing 210 or so while on the freeway with the AC kickin 100%. Outside temps were 105*+. Normally my car runs a tad less then 210.. maybe 200. When I got back into town I purposely drove down a road that stretched one end of town to the next.. several stop signs. This is when I saw temps go to 220-225, AC still on. Although if I turned the AC off it recovered to 210 and if I idled it would recover to 210 with the AC still on.

I did notice my oil pressures at idle were low though, enough to make me worry a bit. I was seeing 30psi but quickly going back to 50-60 under acceleration and settling a tad over 40-45psi at cruise in 6th on the freeway.

Anyone seeing the oil pressure differences? Or temp differences?

well im pretty happy with the cars setup! im going to leave it as is untill i get the built engine in the winter! anywho its been 113* + and my car saw 245* on the free way and i had to pull over!! i have very low oil pressure as well at idle a little over 40 but doesnt go back up to 60 when driving. it is a ls6 ported oil pump befor the heat it was great and now it sucks!
on top of this situation on my way home i was hearing a looooooooud humming noise and i smelt raw gas. it seems like there is a great situation with my dual walbro pump system this is really not good!!!
im soo pissed with the tempature and gas situation!!!
