Default Some TTi kit oiling questions before install

OK, been doing some reading about the oil setups for the TTi street kit, or similar. I have read some guys use the normal TTi recommended oil return without issues, but others have smoking problems. Have also read some guys put a restrictor in teh oil feed, but smokinhawk toasted his turbo that way (and apparently Turbonetics does not recommend a restrictor).

So, I have a couple questions. First, would it work to run a scavenge pump to the valve cover (with a metal screen filter in between pump and valve cover)? I think this might be the best way overall, since I would rather not put a restrictor in the oil feed.

Second, if I do drill/tap the pan for the return, would it be best to do the TTi way, or tap the front portion of the pan? Pete.

TTi way (thanks to StoleIt for the pic)

Alternative in front of pan

My thinking is in the front of the pan location the oil would not have to fight gravity at all to get back into the pan. With it mounted vertically like TTi recommends the oil has to travel up a little to make it to the pan.

uhm, the TTI way is crazy.

Your idea will work great, but.. BE CAREFUL you dont drill into the oil pickup tube which lays across there

Yea it isn't the most logical form, but it works. I haven't had any problems with it, so I guess the turbo is mounted up high enough that it still gravity drains.

Bishop, the guy I bought my kit from way back when, didn't have any problems with it mounted their either. Also with my picture, that was when it was still lose and not clamped in, its a bit tighter now.

Neal, do you run a restrictor for the oil feed line?

i have a weird, and probaly stupid, question but could u tap the oil return somewhere very low on the timing cover? at least then u could take the cover off and make a very nice sealed hole without droping the oil pan.......

i have mine done like country boy has his and it works great, i used to have it the way tti recomended and it sucked

you can do it the way you were talking about in the front of the pan, the ohio boys had it done like that on there formula and it worked fine,

the problem with the tti method is that the oil has to return upward on the right angle fitting to go back in the pan, so its harder and will smoke

Provided there is enough room and enough structure I think I will try the front of the pan like in my picture (mainly to save having to remove the pan from the car). If for some reason that does not look like it would work I will go with Carl's method.

smokinhawk, after burning up your T76 did you use a restrictor after that at all? I am guessing no. Also, when you moved your oil return to the country boy style did that cure your smoking issues?

Don't let the vertical portion of the feed fool you.

As long as the exit point is higher than the entry point it will drain.

Basic fliud mechanics

Anybody ever siphoned a gas tank before?

Well, exit point is barely higher than entry into the pan with a TTi kit. I do know a little about fluid mechanics. There is just a gravity drain from turbo to pan, and if there is next to no angle on the return hose than you have very little to force oil into the pan. Plus you have 2 90 degree fittings to get the oil thru.

This is not like siphoning a gas tank. That involves creating a pressure differential to move a fluid.

I didn't do it in the front due to not being able to get a drill to fit. I tapped the pan with it still in the car, so that was my only choice.

You mean you could not a get a drill in the right position, or that the drill bit itself was too big for that location?

I am hoping since I will be swapping cams that nothing will be in the way to drill the front of pan.

I'm talking after the fluid is flowing.
