Default what converter for turbo setup?

looking to get a converter to best work with my setup, best for the track not street.

the car is a 97 TransAm with-

383ci
76mm turbo
9" rear with 4.10 but my switch to 3.73
th400 trans. brake
car is 3500lbs
28-10.5 et drag

the trans. needs to come out anyway for a bad leak. I have a 3800 ptc and get 4600rpm on the brake, on the street it goes through the gears very fast and I dont think it would get to the 1000ft mark with any rpm left...

I still don't know if my TCT 'blower' converter is going to work with my new turbo setup... too early to tell.

I'd go less gear 3.73, I'm running a 3.50 in my 9".

I'm running a Vigilante converter, very tight on the street, can cruise below 2000 rpms in 3rd.

I'd also go lower than you 3.73 gear if you plan on driving on the street. I swapped from 3.50's to 2.75's and my sixty foots actually improved. I was unable to hook on 3.50s

Nick, you ever get your setup dyno'd?

I agree on going lower with the gears too... more load = faster spool

no I have not dyno'd it, still have alot of thing to work out before that point, like pulling the trans. and getting my leak fixed, it is very bad!!!!

the car is more of a track car now but I do still have a/c and full interior, thats y this thing is 3500lbs.

In time I will build another long block and step up on the boost(only 10psi now), I'm looking for the 1000hp mark at the flywheel and would like the converter for that engine not the low hp. slug I have now...

on the spool part I go to 1/2 throttle and about 3500rpm and the w/g open, then on thr t-brake it gets full boost very quick.

I use a Neal Chance 3800 and 3.25's in the 9" 3.73's won't load up the turbo as well. It would hurt your times.

4600 rpm on the transbrake is pretty good, actually. My last converter was flashing to 5400 and it still ran good numbers. I think your gear ratio is the problem, not the converter. Like others have said, the 3.73 will still be too much. I just switched from 2.73 to 3.00.

What do you think of the gearing change? Better, worse no difference.

A couple of us out here run the ProYankExtreme 3400 & love it. (the other car has a 370 with a t-76 turbo) Very tight, runs cool, nice street manners, and yet flashes high & makes good power for the dyno / track.

Yeah... I have a blower converter in my th400 also and am hoping it will be up to the task with the twins. I don't want to have to go and redo it again...

3.5 gears in my 9" also and intend to run 28" tires!

I'll let you know after I go to the track. I had run 10.40 at 143 mph. I increased the cid, advanced the cam, changed the converter, and added gear and we'll see what happens.

Yes. Do the math yourself if you want. Figure 140 - 150 mph in the quarter, 10% converter slip, a 26 or 28" tall tire, and a power peak at 5600 rpm and you'll be surprised how tall the gear needs to be.

145 mph, 26" tire, 10% slip, 6100 rpm: 2.82/1 rear gear
