hey,
last night, i was talking with some guys that work with APUs... one of them said something about foil bearings, but i didnt know what the hell he was talking about.
i just remembered it and looked it up... :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foil_bearing

seems interesting, and ideally suited for a race turbo setup... id imagine it has alot less drag then a traditional hydraulic bearing or even a ball bearing....
now on a street car, id imagine the start/stop would kill it quickly... but on a application like a industrial diesel that runs constantly, it might last a very very long time.

IMO its really meant for things that run at elevated rpm levels for long periods. Like you said an autmotive turbo..or even a diesel turbo would have too much mid range and low range rpm operation.

An APU or turbine engine...once started...generally operate at 75% to 98% rpm. APUs are generally at 100% rpm once started.

But for an all out race application with 6 second blasts...it may have small advantages. They have the budget to rebuild them often as well.
