from what i've been reading, most street strip turbo guys with th-400's have been running very tight stalls like 2800 ish. All of the torque from the turbo makes them actually stall much higher however. I'm thinking the 4l80-e is def a better trans for what i want being mainly a street car. Thanks for all your input fellas! So far I've gathered that i will need the 4l80-e trans, converter (looking at around 3000 stall), new driveshaft, longer dipstick (Can i use the longer dipstick that people use in the TH-400 swap?) Flexplate, crossmember, and wiring harness. There may be some other odds n ends but from what i've gathered, i think this is the jist of it. Thanks a lot ObZidian, you were a huge help!

Use a Lokar 36" long dipstick.

Use a 2600rpm stall IF you go with a transbrake. No transbrake = bigger stall.

However, if your imply that a simple BFH mod, like the one that is needed to fit 315, is enough to make you choose between these two trans, then, well, i believe we are completely different people with different levels of mojo.

Its our choice, we should be all wise enough to scale the differences and make and educated decision. I felt that the 4l80e is a wise trans choice, as you feel the th400 is.... but to say that one is "better" than the other becuz it will not require you to actually lift a rubber mallet and massage your trans tunnel a bit, besides your other points you had mention which i do agree with and see your point, well; to me, that isn't a viable difference that will weigh enough to tip the scales. IMO of course!
Gotcha! I run 28 x 10.5W tires, so a little sheetmetal massage is not out of the question for me. I just thought it might be for the thread-starter.

I did not pick up that you referenced another poster. My bad.

Seems as though we agree about that. I see your point, too. I would like an OD, but the expense (read here that I'm cheap) didn't warrant it for me. Wish I had deep pockets like you, because I would have gone 4L80E.

deep pockets? Hmmm.... i wouldn't say i have deep pockets, more like a shallow bowl but with a BIG SPOON. lol

No worries dude, really, i understand that the 4l80e will require more cashola but to me, its well worth it, well, sorta! You have a decent setup there so we're not so far off.

superman, no worries mang, give a hola anytime, i believe you got the jist of it. A transbrake is a great idea as well, looking to get one as well.

anyways, good luck. Mine is going in shortly. I'll get you some pics and a link to the thread if im not to lazy to actually start one.

LAterZ!

If it's not gonna be a track car then I would definately go with the M6. It's just alot more fun IMHO, and I have had both. Get a TEXtralia clutch and don't look back.

With the 4l80 you cut the side ears off the tranny. Thats it. Nothing else on the sheet metal side is affected!

I took the plunge and got a TH400 with all the goodies including a t-brake. My car is by far no daily driver. I figure since it has no AC or heater then it doesn't need OD. Now I have to pick a stall and rear gear ratio for the 9 inch. I am thinking a 3000 stall and 3.50 gear. Any suggestions? I will be running a 325/50/15 DR.

I didnt hack not one item on my car for the 4l80 install. I did not have to hack up not one item on my buddies car with the th400. If you car cutting stuff off the car you are doing something wrong. I had to cut the ears off the 4l80 bell housing. That is it! I did have to relocate the brake lines and move them up and away for the TQ arm with the relocation bracket from Yank. I did notch the tunnel also. But I have the corect tools to work metal were it doesnt look like I took a hammer to it. But you could do that also. Splice the reverse lights and wired the TC lockup to a relay system with a switch.

If money isn't an issue and you want a highway friendly bulletproof auto, the 4L80E is a no brainer. Unfortunately I can't afford that trans so I'll be going with a TH400 and tall gear. A twin turbo M6 would definately be a whole lotta fun though. HHmmmm

well, superman, you could go M6 if that is what you really want? Its really not a matter of not knowing how to drive it, but how many hours you spend in it to figure it out.

Manual is fun, but dd it, well, here in miami, it got old in my DSM's and in my old CTS-V..

alot of fun though when you get open road. Also, textralia all the way!!

right now its either 4l80-e or M6 here.... 4l80-e would be with a nice yank 3000 or 3200, m6 would be with a textralia for sure

I decided to give Prefomabuilt (SP) a shot on the verter. I am gonna go with a 3000 stall in the TH400. I will be running 325/50/15 DR's. I have t decide on a gear for the 9 inch now. Thinking a 3.50 would be nice.

i agree if drag racing at a track is the main purpose of the car, for sure go auto, but if its a car you like to drive all day and cruise at 80 go stick.......by the way has anyone concidered doing a liberty manual, with that torque converter set-up that the 5.0 and mustany drag racing guys are using.......... best of both worlds but a think its a $10,000 dollar set-up? but hey...its only money
