do the splayed 4 bolt conversion, should be just as strong, if not stronger than a regular 4 bolt, and boost away

I had a 350sbc built for a lot of procharger boost, and had a choice of old blocks to use. The builder at the machine shop preferred that I drop off a 2 bolt block to convert to a splayed 4 bolt, saying it would be stronger than a factory 4 bolt.

there was a guy on the mustang forum a while back trying to build a very budget twin turbo. he used a four blot fist and got over 600rwhp form that. he then decided to use a BONE STOCK 2 bolt block and got over 500rwhp i think.

you could always just try it! if you cook the block then you can always upgrade to a aftermarket one or find a 4 bolt one

thanks CHris.

No matter what you use, the main caps are going to walk with big boost.

I'd use the 2 bolt block, with the splayed cap mod, and use bigger/longer dowels to help keep them still..

Breaking the caps is not the issue, cap walking is. With 4-bolt billet steel caps, mine still walk and fret the block at 16 - 24 psi boost. I've heard of main bearing failures and cranks breaking due to cap walk because the mains are no longer aligned if the caps are moving around. I would be scared to see what would happen on my motor with 2-bolt mains since they walk so much with 4-bolts. A local guy with a 2-bolt BBC and nitrous had his walk so much that they welded themselves to the block.

. . . and this is a quote from the guy.

"I think it may be severe crank distortion and cap walk chewing on the main bearings a bit. . . . I pulled the pan and looked at #2 and #3 mains. They are down to the copper . . . The crank is smooth but the main bolts were kind of loose and the caps were walking around quite a bit and fretted the block a fair amount . . . Only the cap walk tells the story."

I wouldn't really call this "holding up to the power."
