do i need a bung for my oil return in the pan?

do i need a bung for my oil return in the pan? i just took off my oilpan, what a pain in the ***, even with the k-member dropped alot it still didnt want to come out. well now i can either drill and tap it right now or wait till tom to have someone weld an aluminum bung into the side. do i need to weld in the weld in this bung or will i be fine just drill and taping it?
If you have the option, I'd weld it for the piece of mind. On mine, the fitting was in the front of the pan and it stripped itself loose from tension on the oil return line. Could have been nasty if I didn't catch it in time. Thought the damn car was on fire. Went back and got it welded in if nothing else just for the piece of mind.
