850rwhp and down, I would use a 2001 factory ecm and EFI Live with a sd tune...2 or 3 bar. Delete the maf. Use 60lb/hr high Imp Mototron injectors and a great fuel system with a rail mounted regulator and a return line to the tank. If you want more power than that, I would use BS3 so you can go big with low Imp injectors.

65ls1, power goal?
I'm thinking it would be $1500 for stock ecu, custom harness, and HPT... Or $2000 for BS3.
The tipping point is injector size and power goals to me. If you need to run low impedance injectors add $300 for a converter box and I think at that point the better choise is BS3.

stock ecu = free
one can clip wires and run extensions for a few bucks
HPT 3-bar is a few hundred (free if someone buys HPT and uses 2 of the provided credits)
injector driver is 250
This is way less than 1K

Just a personal opinion. For me, If you're going for that much power forget the driver and take the additional safety/benefits that BS3 has in one box.

I'm building my 1000+ setup around a stock computer

Brian, he's putting this setup in a 65 Chevelle, reread his post. So I assumed he had to buy a pcm and harness, and I assumed he would buy a premade harness though I'm sure he could buy a pullout harness and ecu for $500. I don't know what HPT 2/3 bar costs but I assume somewhere around $400. So...
Cheapest $1150, priciest $1500
(ecu, harness, injector driver, hpt 2/3 bar).

"except for closed loop WB"........if you say that real fast, it's not much of a benefit....
Plus built in 2 step.
Plus it can drive low imp injectors without worry....a 'converter box' has somw worry built in.
Plus boost control.
Plus map control above 3 bar.
But I hear ya....I ran 710rwhp off a stock ecm last year. Plan on being +800rwhp this year. It's just better to have a BS3 if you're starting with a clean piece of paper and +1000rwhp for better power control on slick tracks, etc. Ask W2W.

I have heard the benefit to the factory ecu is the self learn capability verses aftermarket, price is a issue but also someone local in oc cal to dyno tune and willing to work with factory ecu.Is wideband nec the most I will probably boost is 14.5 where my internal wastegates are set.I am going to use an aftermarket harness refered to nelsons performance is this a good choice ?Also the map will probably be 2 bar.trying to achieve 800rwhp.The bottom end is stock ls1 block .005 over eagle stroker crank manley rods and custom je pistons. Is 60lb/hr injector the right size for this combo? This is going to be a street/strip car so I will need good driveability. Thanks guys!!!

over 3-bar, definately a plus, but not too many people have pushed a LSx platform over 30 psi
low-z injectors w/o worry...its the same electronics inside I bet as a converter box...not sure why running one would make me worry...
built in 2-step....single rev limit? Harlans new magic box supposed to multi-limiter w/ retard...once again is the BS3 comprable. Sometimes external items driven by a computer give more functionality (2-step and boost controller in this example)

The most ive heard of as far as pushing the lsx is 20psi.I plan on running 14.5.Im not totaly sure yet but im leaning towards factory ecu if I can find someone local to tune ecu with hptune in socal ca.Also with a chassis dyno a big plus!!!Bs3 to my knowledge has alot more custom programing in comparison to stock and really good boost tables which in 3 bar would be a must.Alot of the local tunes in my area a dead set on motec.Very costly but will definately do the job.
