I have ran high horsepower drag setups through IRS setups with no problems.

Vette IRS's hook REALLY hard without major suspension upgrades.

I have a friend that runs low 9's @ 145+ on original type C3 IRS with alot of upgrades.

If you check out www.tomsdifferentials.com they sell every part you could need to make your IRS bulletproof

Scroll through the next 10 pages after that one
http://www.tomsdifferentials.com/catalog.asp?pg=17

They have a direct bolt in 12-bolt upgrade (gm never offered this)

With their upgrades itll handle any horsepower you can throw at it

Your right, Toms has everything to make my IRS rock with the right amount of $$$$.$$... And they are a well respected company... But going to a Fab9 Ford 9" eliminates 4 "U" joints giving me piece of mind. As for the cost to upgrade my IRS to 9 sec strength I could build a 7 sec 9" rear for the same dough. I might loose some handling quality but I really don't think it would be that bad.

You are correct, the stock IRS is only good for around 500HP. The complete IRS is coming out in favor of a ford 9" rear with ladder bars in the control arm pockets and coil over shocks. My mind was made up when a friend of mine lost an axel with a strong small block on street tires. So there was no way I was going to run the IRS after that. I'm waiting for the body to come back so I can take some location measurements and then its going for sale on eBay to fund the swap.
