the stock crank is a damn good one. it maybe cast but the secret is really in the mains of the LSx motors. on sbc's, even 4 bolt mains would have a little bit of twist/movement. with the cross bolts that the ls1's have it moves a LOT less which allows the crank to live at much higher power levels. that coupled with a superior casting process conribute to its strength.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the more common failure mode for cranks in general, including the stock cast ones, is bending not breaking.

I'm pretty sure that was through a TH400 too. You know that thing sucks quite a bit of power too.

I was actually using Derty's old stock crank (so it was pre-abused) and never had a problem. Don't know how much RWHP it was making but it went 161 mph at 3450 lbs on its best pass and 155+ for like 50 passes without any problems. The bearings weren't so happy from the 8000+ rpm's it saw three times a pass though.

I've never heard of a stock crank breaking except in Top fuelers. I hear that's actually what goes first on those motors, they twist real bad. As far as a stock LS1, I figure the weakest link would be pistons followed by rod bolts.

I was talking about this a few months ago with a local engine builder. He said his round track motors do better with a regular crank cause it'll deflect a little which makes them a little less accurate but the big buck forged cranks would just snap and take out most of the motor, where the cast cranks would just bend and usually could be caught before destroying the entire engine.

No need to go there yet bro... you'll be fine, even with the future changes.

I'm liking the idea of a nitrous kit for the truck. Think we could get it on without Ash knowing?

I can vouche for mike b's stock crank, it was in an ls2 block and had well over 100 passes plus drag week at well over 1000hp, probably 1300 or better actually. It went mid 8's at 160's at over 3700lbs with out one problem engine wise. For you guys building under 1000hp street setups you would be wasting your money on anything else. IMPO People who are tearing up stock cranks at lower than 1000hp level have engine assembly, oiling and or tuning issues not weak cranks.

So if I tear down my engine and replace only the rods and rod bolts with say Eagle h-beam rods and some arp rod bolts then slap it back together (with new gaskets of course) I can easily push 800-900 with no problems on the stock block, crank, and pistons?

Yeah, I guess might as well since they are going to be out and I could just drop the compression so it can handle more boost.

pistons are the #1 killer in LSX engines... hyperruectic pistons suck donkey *****... ring lands go bye bye real quick with anywhere over 600 RWHP it seems.

pistons, bolts, polished/balanced rods/crank and your good for 900+ rwhp
