Default rear mounts

I've been entertaining this idea for a while....and I built my own front mount b-4.

The next one will be rear mount.

I'm thinking the misunderstanding on these home done kits are not enough people are trying it, and the data from these kits aren't being shared enough due to people bashing others for trying.

I built a kit with a diesel turbo. I had a blast doing it. It was not the right turbo for my application....it worked, but not well. I ended up getting a master power t70 and it fixed my problems....until I blew it up.

One thing that I have saw on the rear mount setups that are flying, is that it takes a larger turbo to make the same power on a rear mount than it does on a front mount. I've seen and researched this for quite some time. A t70 on a rear mount will not produce the power or same results as a t70 front mount. If you want t70 power on a rear mount, you have to go with a bigger turbo. Maybe an t76 or 88mm or something. Don't start bashing me saying an 88 will make the same power as the t70, that's not what I'm saying. I don't know the exact size it will take, just something a good bit larger.

Of course the a/r on the compressor side will be different.....I'm not going there. I've been reading on this set-up, and haven't seen anyone make the statement of having to have a larger turbo, so I'm adding my .02 to the mix. It probably has been said, I just haven't seen it.....for all the search freaks who are getting ready to bash me for trying to re-invent a statement which someone else may have said before.

Another thing, I'm thinking a meth setup would be better for spooling on a rear mount than an intercooler, due to the volume of air that would have to be compressed.....just another thought. I'm still in the planning of my kit.

Huge compressor side + a t-4 turbine side + rear mount=good power!

I'll keep watching.....

I have had the pleasure of racing a stock engined lt1 sts at low boost like 5psi and it ripped my 96z a new one like three times in a row. Our cars were both lt1 verts and would be very close in weight. I had only mild mods no heads, cam or headers just 3.42 gear swap and little stuff. But that sts plain beat me like red headed stepchild and he was at 5psi.
Another guy in our car club has one in his ls1 and stock engine. I have not ridden in it yet or raced it with my various toys.
I almost almost bought an sts myself. But the price after you added on various things that it didn't come with started to add up fast. Their original pricing think was like 1000 cheaper than when I looked. Plus our dollar was a lot lower then .
And you didn't get intercooler,no blow off even.
For what I am paying for my aps twins I don't see sts as a viable option except mabye for a bit easier install. Still don't care if I spend a few days even a week on my aps install. When I am done I have no doubt I will have awesome simply awesome.
Anyway not trying to diss the sts .The system seems to work quite well and anyone thats says it doesn't will likely be roasted like I was by one. They might not be quite as good as a front mount but they are not that bad at all. Just a bit too pricey. I don't like the scavenger pump. I do like they leave the engine compartment clean.
I don't like no subframe connector, I don't like the kit don't even come with front mount for the price. I think they might spool a bit slower. But really they do work.

70Stang, I'm surprised you haven't been sued then by STS !!

My STS kit is wicked fast...i'm the fastest guy on this forum and no one can touch me on the street! When I win, I want the money and the respect!!

BTW, my vert already has SFC's

if i didnt have to spend a **** ton of money on my tune, then my kit would've been pretty cheap. with me making 503 on 5.5psi it took 5.5-6k with decent spool(.96 housing)

i love the kit and there are downsides to it, but oh well, its MY street car and i'll enjoy it for the time being....... i will eventually move to a front mount once i get financially stable though

I make rear mount kits and front mount kits. For a street f body a rear mount is great. Zombiess car is running 10.50's @ 5000 ft da's @ 3800+ lbs.....with ac everything. It figures to 740 rwhp or so. I have a 99 camaro that I went 10.20 @133 in ....its a oem built short block still......with heads from richard at WCCH and a zo6 cam.

When space permits a front mount is better but if done correctly a rear mount can be indistinguishable from a front mount. I could take you for a ride with ear plugs, and you could not tell me where the turbo was located. In fact I have a front mounted car now that is not even close to all the rear mount cars I ve done. Im not impressed with the other companies stuff, I think they try to dumb it down to sell more and thus some owners dont end up with what they were sold. This is atleast partly due to the owners own ignorance.

I know; that's the point I was making. This thread seems to focus on STS more than rear-mounts in general

ive helped build 3 rear mount setups in the last year and have had relatively good success with each. One was a ford ecoline van, another our ford focus, and the last being my T/A which is getting finished this month.
I think the discussion will go in circles for these kind of topics but for the most part, everything has been covered here. There are things that can be done to make a rear mount "sufficient" enough for particular goals.

Heres what we have done:
-coated and ported stock headers then wrapped from collectors back to the turbo
-made our own charge piping (goes under the axle in my car), and put it more snug up against the frame
-I thought it looked unsafe having a rear mount exposed in the back, so I took one of my safety cables (heavy duty high temp ones used on my film sets) and bolted the cable to the body of the car to prevent theft
-run an intercooler regardless of what they say about 5psi cooling the charge, ect
-get a cam to help with spool/power as well as the correct A/R for your setup
