Sounds like the problem was all tuning related.
I have seen several cars on the dyno (and my own car with the in car wideband) that were dangerously lean on a 2-step before adjustments were made. A lot of people forget to verify it when tuning.
Keep in mind that even the strongest motor won't last under extreme detonation...nail the tuning and then work from there.

And Scott's right, if your tuning isn't correct your asking for a rebuild. It's very easy to break the strongest parts with the wrong tune.
That is pretty interesting...I always though it was a result of the combination of boost and lack of fuel in the PE v. RPM table at lower RPM.
So it is not as dangerous as it looks...cool!
