royal purple =sludge
I just pulled my oil pan today and I must of had a 1/4in of thick black nasty tar like sludge in the pan the pick up tube had tar like residue on it and the screen was about a 1/4 blocked with sludge. I ran mobil 0ne for the first 10-15k miles and then royal purple from there untill 48K miles and changed the oil every 3,000 with a ac delco filter. Has anyone else had this problem? I am concerned if I should run royal purple in my new 408 or not.

Sludge in oil is typical heavy crude components falling out of solution, or oxidized oil. By definition, sythetic oils don't have heavy crude components, nor do they oxidize as quickly as conventional oil. If you are getting sludge in the pan, I wouldn't quickly blame the RP. It could be compatibility issues with the old Mobil 1, or contamination of combustion products/antifreeze/etc.

I have seen this on LSX based motors and mod motors alike. Ive had customers come in and tell me theyve run nothing but RP for the life of their motors. They look like black goo throughout.
I will never support or put any Royal Purple products in any vehicle. Ive seen too many issues with their products.
Mobil 1, Torco, or Castrol non synthetic for break in periods.

I've seen the same thing with RP. I almost refused to do a heads/cam swap on a guy's car once, the drainback holes in the heads were full of thick goo. I put some in a baggie for him to look at, and needless to say he was VERY shocked, and switched oils immediately after. On one of our personal vehicles, it only took 2000 miles of RP to take a previously spotless motor, and coat it in a burned flaky purplish mess on the inside of the timing cover.
Maybe it's certain grades of RP or something, because there's FAR too many people with good reports, and reasonably few horror stories.

In my experiences as a plain ole wrench it seems that oil can contain so much contamination before it is saturated and sludge formation begins. Even the cheapest $.99 stuff seems to do the job if changed at proper intervals. In my last motor the Mobil 1 became goo but it was due to leaking sleeves, I still run Mobil 1 and it is fine now. My guess is that it is another problem and not caused by the oil.

These services are quite common, but mainly used for industrial stuff.

Huh, never run it long enough in anything to notice any sludge, but I’ve had repeated issues with it dissolving RTV and causing leaks. Especially the gear lube. Copper, black, blue, grey, they all just seem to turn into a gummy sludge, I’ve even let it sit assembled for a couple of days to make sure that the RTV is totally dry before filling and it still happened.
