Cooling & fuel w/iron block....experts inside...
Also, would there be any advantage to running a 160 degree thermo along w/this radiator and fan, or would that be too much cooling?
I ASSUME since the ATI fan is a straight-blade pull-thru and you'd want the hi-performance fan, the only 16" fan listed as such is:
30102002 16" High Performance Fan-Pull Straight Blade 16.3 3.39 15.75 2360
But, you might do what I would do... call them and ask.
It's a free call.

You know, they DO make a 170 and 180 degree thermostat.
195 IS too high for performance application, in my opinion, so you must do SOMETHING.
Optimally, I'd think you want 178 to 180 degree temps for getting performance, so I'd at LEAST want to turn the fans on by then and have them cut off at about 172 or so. But, for that to be helpful, you need the thermostat to open. Up North, I might try a 170 degree thermstat... but, that's me. Many think you should go all the way, 160, if you are going to change it at all. But some people don't even DRIVE their car in the dead winter. You have to exercise some decision-making yourself, on this issue.

This one bolted right into the mounting pieces already designed for the ATI shroud.
But, if I were to do it again, Id' get one with more air volume, even if it does draw a lot of current.
The 16" Turbo-Flex claims 2,950 CFM, which is even more than the SPAL fan. If the Turbo-Flex fan has longevity, I think I'd prefer that capacity even if it means drilling four holes into the ATI shroud and putting in four bolts, or tapping holes and screwing it in, or whatever.
I just hate being in the staging lane at a track, seeing temps climb and knowing I am about to run at reduced power. I hate having to make a street run and having to sit until temps comes down while someone is talking smack. I hate driving around in traffic in the heat and even CONSIDERING turning on the heater when normal people turn on the AC.

I guess there are some major CONS to running an iron block, but once everything gets straightened out, its all good...
I'm going to call Spal this afternoon,
The Best V8 Stories One Small Block at Time
i like the flexalite dual fan setup: pulls 2500cfm at like 15amps instead of 25 that the spals do and you get them for $200 from summit. The nice thing about them too is they are only 1 1/4" thick so it free's up A LOT
19115 16" High Performance Electric Fan
Mounting Area Req'd: 16" x 16" x 3-3/4"
Est. CFM: 2950
Motor RPM: 1750
AMP Draw: 9.8
Fuse Size: 30 AMP
I'm trying to order today.
Sorry it took so long for the reply, I guess I forgot to read the post agian. Anyways it looks like you already ordered the Spal fan. The Spal is a DIRECT replacement to the ATI supplied fan. I know that the SPAL fan flows more air.
I think these numbers are right, but I am not sure on the ATI fan numbers
ATI supplied fan 1600 CFM (I think)
Spal fan 2360 CFM @ 12V
I talked with BE COOL about their radiator and fan. The BE Cool 16" fan is the Spal fan, just under the BE COOL name. The tech also told me that are cars also run at 13.5V so the fan actually flows more CFM then listed, about 2600-2800 CFM.
If you need any more info on the Spal fan you can e-mail me or call Force Fed Performance. FFP really knows their stuff when it comes to the ATI kit and are always great to talk with on the phone. BTW FFP sold me the fan, I give the credit to them for the Spal fan mod.
At least I could sit in the staging lane and actually see temp DROP instead of rise or stay the same. It would go no lower than 190 degrees, though, with it hot outside.
Still, much better!
all these guys do is race vipers.
i was talking to the guy there about what they do for cooling , and surprisingly he told me they use a bigger radiator ( seemed narowr than an f-body's) and they use a 2001-2002 factory fan.
he said they never had a cooling problem with that setup even with the ac on in stop and go traffic.
the cool thing is the fan comes with it's own "trap door" rectangular shroud and i looks like it ca clear the blower on ower cars.
he said that the fan ( a 2 speed unit) costs about $200-220 and when he turned it on it blew air ( in my opinion) with more force that what my spal fans do.
i'll have to talk to them again to get the exact dimensions to see if i can fit one on my car.
