Default Home made catch can

Got tired of wiping motor oil off the bottom of my D1 & the breather hose under there so I built a cheapie catch can. I got a K&N breather filter & used some air line fittings on the side of piece of 3" pipe I had left over from the intercooler pipes. Routed all 3 ports on the valve covers to it & dumped the PCV system. Made a bottom disc & welded it on, used a big azz washer for a backhoe bucket on top with a short pipe the right size for the breather. It works good for my stock bottom end 500HP set up. No more mess under the head unit. Did a couple of passes Sunday in 85 degree heat & the car went 2 MPH faster trap than it had before in similar weather. Could the lack of crankcase vapors going in the intake charge make that difference?

Sure it could - those vapors are hot and have oil suspended in them that could affect combustion. 2mph is not enough to credit the catch can, but no mess is worth it anyways. Nice use of local materials. Better than the PCV pipe one I saw someone display here.

Mine is made of PVC pipe and end caps and it's held up fine for 5 years now.

Unless you plan on moutning it to the header I don't see the problem.

For us frugal folks with no access to a welder it works great.

I think I spent about $8 but mine looks like I spent $8 but it does work so for me that's all I cared about.

I mounted it over by the battery on that fender area by where the battery ground is.

Same place mine is as you can see, I might build one out of sch 40 pvc & see what it looks like, would have to weigh less than the steel one I built. The big money in mine is the K&N breather.

The reason I don't like PCV is the consequences of an unexpected meltdown. You could literally lose your car to a fire. I'd rather have a heavy one of steel than one that could melt/burn.

K&N breather VS breather from advance...hhhmmm that would save you a few, BUT the look of a K&N is FAR better

The K&N I have is 1-3/4" diam at the rubber coupling, that's what I liked so it would flow. I didn't see anything close to that at Autozone/Advance.

yes the setup above looks far better.

but along with my theme I am using a little breather filter from Kragen that cost like $3

again doesn't look fabulous but has been doing the trick.

Yes, it allows a some amount of vacumn to be applied to the crank case during boost. This does give you some power. You need to run a CC to keep the oil out of the turbo. Others have put bleeds into the DP and get the same effect.

Schedule 40 PVC is pretty stout pipe. I might try building one out of it, still use the K&N & if painted black it might look better than my 1st try in steel & weigh less.

I think Mecham used an older version of autocad for that mechanical drawing.

Don't you remember it? It was

"Semi-AutoCAD".
