How bad is the 6-rib

Default How bad is the 6-rib

I searched and found a little bit of information on this, but wanted a little bit more. Exactly how bad is the 6-rib setup on a car running about 6-7 lbs. of boost? I know its really bad when you get into bigger boost numbers, but is it horrible at low boost also? Another question is about how much does it cost to switch to the 8-rib system? Thanks in advance.

If you don't slip on a lo-boost 6-8# setup with a 6-rib, an 8-rib won't do a thing for you.

Switch to 8-rib is: 1 wider belt, 1 blower pulley, 1 idler pulley, 1 crank pulley, plus anything else on that belt. Figure $400 in a pulley/belt swap, maybe $500.

I too am trying to figure this out...Im going to be running a stock motor with about 8lbs of intercooled boost...Is the 8-rib setup absolutely necessary? My goal is 500rwhp DD.

To answer the thread starter...I believe you also have to pin the crank when using an the crank pulley for a 8rib set up. I may be wrong tho.

A 6-rib setup should hold 6-7 pounds of boost with no problems.

Pinning the crank puts a metal pin between the crankshaft and the harmonic balancer to help prevent the balancer from turning/slipping on the crankshaft. The supcharger puts extra load and tension on the balancer. This extra load can sometimes cause the balancer to slip when it gets too great. If the balancer slips too much it can loosen the balancer bolt and cause the balancer to come off.

I have been running a 6 rib and 7# now for about 12k, zero slippage, and same belt!

same with my buddy.

we made a home made system and with the larger crank pulley he makes 12# and 650rwhp all day on the 6 rib.

The 6 rib setup is fine. But once you start getting up there in boost, you'll need to upgrade. You won't stay at 6-8lbs for long. Trust me.
