Default To do H/C? or not to do H/C?

Ok im getting ready to put a procharger setup on my car and am wondering...should I throw a set of 317's and a mild cam in while Im at it? Or just the 317 heads? Would JUST the heads make the setup any safer vs the stock heads and CR?

Car is a DD and on the stock bottom end...Im looking to make around 500rwhp SAFE and RELIABLY on the stock engine.

Procharger is a P1SC with twin intercoolers pushing no more than 8lbs of boost, also plan on using the 6-rib setup.

Trying to take advantage of every safety precaution I can buy...I have boost, wideband, fuel pressure, IAT gauges.

dont waste your money on 317 heads. if 500 is your goal (and you WILL want more down the line), you will be just fine. i would suggest a cam though suited for your setup, but its not necessary. either way you will need better valve springs.

I plan on Patriot Gold Springs and hardened pushrods.

But my question is...do I NEED to do 317 heads and cam to meet my goals? Will the heads have any benifit for me without a cam?

Also if I add a cam its probably going be either the Lingenfelter GT2-3 or GT7

My main question is this....if I go 317's and a blower cam will I be able to run less boost to make 500rwhp than if I was using my stock heads and cam? Will it be safer that way?

The rod bolts, the torque arm mount and the rear end, have cam and had heads waiting to get everything else ready. I do like the methanol. Down on 150 highway.

500 rwhp is attainable on the stock heads. 317's are just going to lower your compression, so you can run more boost safely. However, you can easily make 500 rwhp with a good blower cam, patriot duals, and 8 psi. Just make sure your fuel system is up to the task and id suggest meth injection as a safety valve since your on the stock bottom end.

What are the cc's of your heads and what are the cc's of the 317's if the 317's are a bigger cc use those with the cam and a thicker head gasket. Be sure to use head studs with the thicker head gasket and then you can add more boost. If you change the rod bolts you could get away with 650rwhp safely.

If you are going to go that route I think I'd use meth injection for sure to aid in safety
