Default Blew out the dipstick?

As you all know I fixed my leaking oil problem last week. So I had the Hawk out last night for a little meet. I got into her just a little bit to see how she felt. All the sudden white smoke everywhere. I pull over and my dipstick popped out and got oil everywhere!

Now that I have a proper PCV setup, why do I still have crank case ventilation problems? Is lower crank case pressure totally seperate from upper crank case pressure? Am I to assume that now that I'm popping the dipstick that my rings are going bad?

Mike

Do you have a check valve on your pcv line, if not that will cause you to pressurize the crank case. A pcv valve alone will not cut it.

Either that or you broke a ringland...but it would be missing.

OK, I don't have a check valve instaled on my PCV line. Could you explain how the check vlave will aleviate the dipstick problem?

Also I am missing up top. I thought it was spark blowout. It's very spiratic, sometimes it's there, sometimes it's not. I can't get into her often cause my fuel pump is weak and leaning me out under boost. So I can't keep going WOT to try and figure out a pattern to the spark blow(or miss or whatever it is).

Thanks for your suggestions guys.

You need to have check valve in front of the pcv valve. Plus a few other things have to be disconnected and routed differently.

All the more reason to remove the pcv, slap a tiny breather on each side, cap the remaining port holes, and call it a day.

White smoke, (was it more like steam)?. Lean under boost, hopefully JUST a head gasket. Angelo

nsupersp0rt, no oil coming out of my breathers. Everytime I check them I expect gooey-ness, but keep getting surprised with nothing. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Well the Hawk isn't my daily driver. So It's just been chilling for a while. I bought a compression tester adn will give that a shot to see if anything inside the cylinders looks out of whack.

In my mind, I'm seeing the same things as everyone else, and while I'm hoping it's something not bad, I preparing myself for the bad news. So there's really no rush, cause I certainly don't have the money for a new block right now. So I have to decide am I just gonna not get on it for 6-12 months while I save the money or can I remove the blower and see if there is a dealer that will overlook my fuel system upgrades?

I guess I was nieve to think I could run lean up top and as long as I pulled my timing back enough to eliminate KR, then I was fine. I'm not exactly sure what causes a cracked ring. But I'll do some testing and make sure that is the issue and then start asking questions, how it happened.

Thanks for asking, I'll keep you guys informed.

Can someone explain to me what they mean by "ring land"? Is that the same as just saying a ring, or is a ring land different from a ring. What is involved in replacing a ring or ring land?

The ringlands are little 'lips' around the top of the piston that keep the rings in place. The rings go around the top of the piston, but since the piston and bore are almost the exact same size, you couldn't normally fit a ring in between. So a notch is cut around the piston for the ring to sit in. As such, these lips are the weak point.

So what problem would the cracked ringland exhibit? I recently dynoed my car and the car starts stumbling at 8psi, at 7 it seems to be fine. Although I noticed that I'm getting a high # of misfires in cylinder #3 . . . I have changed the plug, swapped wires and coil packs, no dice. Still misfiring.

A busted ring land would let the compressed air/fuel mix into your crankcase.
Apparently stock LS1 have thin lands as compared to ? Anyone heard this?
