Hey guys, I've got my new build all out on paper and will be starting it in the next few weeks. The powerplant will consist of the warhawk block and heads (427) with a Procharger F3 up front shooting for 1600-1800rwhp. It will be a land speed application and motor will rev to 7500. My question is what rods would work? They would need to be durable as I don't want to be tearing it down often after she's together. It will see limited street use as well. I've talked with several speed shops and engine builders with mixed reveiws on rods. Some say billet, some say stay away from billet cause it's brittle. Then there's the good ole 4340 rods and the newer 300M forged which are by far the most expensive. I haven't heard of a failure of say the eagle rods but don't know if they've ever been pushed that high. Seems to me that it's more in the rod bolt than the rod itself. In that case would say a compstar/eagle rod w/arp3.5 bolts do the trick?

On a side note, would you guys recommend the new felpro gaskets or should I go O ring+copper?

 

I've run billet rods to over 2500hp in small block chevys.I have Lunati billet rods in my own personal twin turbo engine,makes 2500+ and have been using them for 3 years now with no problems.I spin that motor to about 9000.Run copper head gaskets and orings,they hold up good to over 40 psi boost.If you need anything shoot me a pm or call the shop

I have never heard of a failure with the eagle rods either. I've talked to eagle about their rods for my 1500hp applictaion and they said the bolts would be the only problem and i would need L19's. Does anyone know of an eagle H-beam rod failure? Or what A 4340 rod can handle?

 

Never heard of one fail.......
I used the above rods with L19 Bolts in my last motor and using them again in the new Motor Shawn from VA Speed is Building me.

1800 HP is going to be a project...
Whats the budget on the build??
$75-100K for the car???

 

we've used eagles to 1500hp,but 1500 fwhp and 1600-1800 rwhp is a big difference,it's not worth risking 20,000 on a motor to save a couple hundred bucks

Exactly what I'm thinking. I don't mind spendin the coin on the correct component but I don't want to shell out major $$ for something I don't NEED.

 

Howard ultimate duty billet rod for $750 is an awesome deal and can handle 1800 hp or you could run a Dyer's 300M rod which is good for 2000+ hp.

 

I would go with carrillos for that application...

 

id go wit hthe lt1 front clip for land speed record...just sayin

 

This setup isn't going into an fbody, I sold it this summer. The new setup is a full tube chassis rear engined car.

 

Yeah i know and understand..... i think last time i added it up i was over $50K and thats before the latest and greatest...... and the sad is, it never end.......

GRP, BME, or Howard's aluminum rods. Proven performer in high HP applications and ultra light.

 

i know a guys that could get you some billiet TI rods if you want???.........

or you could speak to EPP on here. they are uilding a very similar setup or drag racing. think they are going to be pushing 2000bhp+.

Just the sound of Ti rods says major $$$. I think std billets will do. I'm following the EPP build to see what they come out with. Should be pretty impressive.

I would not use Aluminum in a land speed application, they are great for absorbing shock but stretch just as easily..

Carillo will engineer you the strongest rod for your application. Have your Builder call the engineering dept and get a spec sheet. they will take care of the rest.

 

I thought the Eagle rods were all made with metal from China now? (= weak)
