Default Power #'s from an STS on a LS6?

I'll be installing a used STS on my 2001 Z-28 over the next few months. My car has a 2003 LS6 crate engine in it right now, I know the compression's a bit high, but I was curious what you guys think she'll put out. I'm an FI newbie and this is my first FI car. The car has all the bolt-ons, minus the headers as I'll be going back to manifolds for the turbo. I'll be doing a 4L80E swap at the same time along with a Strange 12 bolt with 3.42's. The STS has the GT67 upgrade, a TRT FMIC and meth injection. What do you think the #'s will be, what stall would you recommend (3000?) and how much boost do you think I can get away with? I'll be getting it dyno tuned when it's done, but just looking for a prediction. Thanks!

I will sell the ls6 heads and get 317 truck heads to lower compression. But meth and intercooler on a stock block 8 psi should put you in the low 500 range.

I was thinking about that. I was actually just poking around a found a set of 317's for a decent price. They claim to have a basic bowl blend and general clean-up in the chambers and ports. What do you think a set of 317's is worth?

The worth of the 317's is almost entirely going to depend on what was done to them and if they are complete with springs you can use. The parts for sale forum should have a few examples to get a price reference from. Just remember, the valves in a 317 are heavier than in the ls6 heads, so a spring upgrade is require deven without the FI, which definitely mandates a better spring. BTW, welcome to the world of FI. The much maligned STS kit is actually a pretty good starter kit to learn from (and enjoy).

Thanks for the advise and warm welcome! I actually have a set of PRC double springs with titanium reatainers I bought off a member on here. I was planning on upgrading the springs on the 243's anyway. With the 317's 72 cc chambers I should be around 9.5:1 right? I don't want to push it with stock pistons, but what would be a safe boost level at that SCR?

A "safe boost level" is something you will never get a real answer to. I personally feel that at over 10#'s you are taking a big risk. The reason I say this is because factory parts have a build tolerance. Some are MUCH better than others. Quite a few people have blown motors at only 5-6#'s of boost, but usually that is due to an unsafe tune. Some people have run 15#'s + on stock "built by God on wednesday afternoon" factory parts. A good rule of thumb is that if you do mods that would void a factory warranty, you should have enough spare cash to replace the carnage with upgraded parts.

A whole lotta maybe's here. But I had a rear mount setup on my '98 Formula, with an LS6 engine. I did lower the compression a bit by sliding in some Titan copper head gaskets. And it also had a custom cam (234/238 @ .050 .595/609 Lift, 114 Lobe Sep), vic jr intake, GT45R turbo, built A4 trans, SS3500 stall, and a FMIC.

Anywho, it made 681rwhp/861rwtq on 15#'s with 110 racegas. And 560rwhp/728rwtq on 10#'s and 93 pump gas.

One reason it's hard to give a blanket answer as to a "safe boost level", is because it also depends on the turbo. 10#'s on a "small" turbo is quite different from 10#'s on a "large" turbo.

Regardless, safe is relative to how good the "package" is. Meaning, is the fuel system up to the task? Is the engine truly healthy? And probably most important, how experienced is the tuner?

So my advice would be, don't shop around for the least expensive place to tune it. Shop around for the most qualified. A couple hundred extra bucks with the right tuner, could very easily save you an engine and a lot less headache.

For whatever that's worth.

W/ the right cam and good tuning you can see 500RWHP on 5lbs of boost. Safe boost.....on a good tune w/ FMIC, probably 8PSI or so. Mine's at 5PSI because I'd like to keep the shortblock alive as long as possible A crappy tune and /or crappy fuel setup will blow the engine at even 5PSI......so tuning and fuel are critical. Just my $0.02

No, not an EPP grind. This was a custom grind I started experimenting with back in late '03. I ran this cam in several turbo cars and loved it. Mainly because it had a mad lope, and still spooled quick.

So what kind of numbers are you making with your setup? And is it a GT45R?

Nah...I sold that car last year. All I have now are the cars in my Sig (and an FJ Cruiser....). But hopefully you'll get to see plenty of the old red T/A.
