Default Anyone get little rock chips on impellor blades?

Has anyone ever gotten little rock chips on the turbine blades? I have a few small ones on my F1A and sent some pics to ATI, who said to sand them smooth and it will work just fine. Anyone seen anything like this before? Anyone got any pics of the impellor after sanded smooth?

How deep are the chips? F1A's use cast or billet compressor wheels? I'd be a bit nervous about sanding on them, can't believe ATI told you to. Any pics of your compressor wheel?

Personally I would sent the impeller wheel to ATI to have it replace/reapired.

If the nicks werent too bad I'd clean them up, impellers arent cheap.

Got any pics?

All ProCharger impellers are 7075 T-6 billet.

Can't just send in the impeller, you would have to send in the entire head unit.

I would be more curious as to the balance of the impeller than any structural integrity issues...how big are these nicks?

Little nicks don't seem to appear to hurt anything, post up a pic if you get a chance. Bob

you say turbine blades??
mean impeller .....

unless they are real bad, like can feel with finger nail , should be ok..
any change in mass on the blades can put wheel out of balance... will decrease life on bearings.

These are the best pictures I can take...I sent these same photos to Ati and they said it shouldnt be out of balance...they recommended sanding the blades smooth based off of these photos I sent them.

Shouldn't affect it at all. My T76 has some similar nicks in the wheel for years and when I sent it in for a rebuild they said it's nothing to worry about, way too small.

I would just knock the high spots down so a crack doesnt start, seen way worse than that..

So can I run it as is, or should I try to take some of the edges off? What should I use to do that? I guess it didnt effect things too much, I did make 623 rwhp on 11 psi with a 355

That wont change anything power-wise, unless they are really bent or something gets between the blades and housing and tears it up.

I would take a very fine file or a dremel with a fine cartridge roll and just knock down any real sharp edges. Main thing I would be concerned about is a crack starting.

dude,

just send the blower back to procharger and have them re-furbish the blades... i had that done... was $300 or so with shipping... hell those blades look DYNAMITE compared to mine but i dont run a filter... Mine were sooo jacked up, looked like the impeller ate a rock! I actually picked quite a bite of HP after procharger sent it back.

they'll prolly throw in a few brand new seals and check it over (wont hurt).

My D-1SC looked worse than that & I smoothed the nicks out & ran it for a while. (search for my post 2 years ago?) The worry is developing cracks at the corners of the nicks or losing enough material to throw the balance off. Yours don't look like they will do either to me.....

Believe it or not, Procharger told us that this wheel would be OK to run...We are going to try it, but it has to effect it somehow...I mean, look at it!!!

^ Wow, that is some major carnage. I assume some sort of rock creature was slumbering inside?
