Default Need help on heads for SC.

Hey guys... I'm doing heads and cam with my new V-9 and I need help pickinga set of heads. What's a good set of heads to get? Something with low CR and big valves? What is some of the heads that you guys are using on you STOCK BOTTOM END? Valve size? Also, what about a good cam shaft?
What do I look for when looking at cams? Lift, dur, LSA?

Thanks for your help.

I have 5.7L TEA Stage 2's on mine....they flow just as well as the 6.0L heads, mine have 73cc chambers, so on a stock compression car that would give you under 9.5:1 compression w/the 73cc chamber....my motor is 9:1 compression....

hey BIGBOS...

How could the CR be lower using LS1 heads? Whats the stock CC's #?
Also, what size valves are you using?

Get the TEA 73cc 9.5:1 compression heads.
For the cam, keep the duration at or under 224.
My favorite for a blown 346ci (with RPMs under 6500) is the Comp Cams 218/224 .527/.534 114 LSA.
With that combo and the 3.125" pulley that comes with the V9 + Aftercooler kit, you should be around 550WHP at 6600RPMs.
Switch over to the 2.75" pulley and bring the RPMs down to 6400, and you should be close to 600RWHP. (But be careful )

Good luck.
Check out my webpage for my combo.

I went with a set of ported 6.0 heads, they are 70-71 CC stock.

I'd go something like 2.02/1.57-1.60 with the valves, and on the cam I'd go with a 6 degree or more split between the intake and exhaust duration.

I'd go like 224/230/114 or step it up and go 230/236//114 if it will fit... You should just research the cam and make your own conclusions. I have an FMS 230/237/115 +2 but I plan to spin it to 7200 rpms.

Thanks a lot guys... I really like the ideal of the 6.0 heads so far. I would really like to keep the CR down. I havent ruled out the TEA heads yet either. The price is probably much better on those. But I want it to flow good.

I have a cam that has a
209/230
554/545

You think this will work well with the blower? I use it with my nitrous and I picked up about 4-5 mph in the quarter. Up from 118 to 123 mph with out tuning.

Interesting.. To add spice to the topic. What if you decided to put forged pistons in the car and use ARP rod bolts with stock rods? Would you be able to spin the car up to 7200rpm with no problem? If not why even put ARP rod bolts in when the weak link is suppose to be the stock rod bolts and not the rods themselves. I have not heard of anyone ruining rods, but instead rod failure is due to stock rod bolts..

ARP rod bolts is definitely good insurance. The ideal budget build is blower pistons with blower ring gap. ARP rod bolts and ARP head studs. Single timing chain, and upgraded oil pump.

Stock crank and rods will take 650RWHP IMO

IMO, there are certain things that are just not worth going cheap on. Things like the timing chain, pistons, etc. and Connecting Rods. Going cheap on things like that can end up costing you your entire motor, or at the very least several thousand dollars, and you might be out of racing, permanently, 'cause you're BANKRUPT.

I just couldn't see doing all that work to pull the motor, tear it down, drop in the forged parts, and then deliberately leave the stock connecting rods. It just didn't make sense. I went ahead and paid the extra $700 for some forged rods. Whats another $700 when you're already spending $5000 for rebuild anyway? Its piece of mind, that what.
Just my 2 cents.

You have a good point Crunch.

I was thinking about pulling my engine since I'll have everything off doing heads and cam swap. I thought I would pull it out and drill the oil pan. since I'm doing that I thought it would be a good idea to install ARP rod bolts.

Do you guys think I should use something other than OEM head gaskets with the blower?

Thanks, Pat

Cometic Multi-Layer Steel (MLS) head gaskets. http://www.cometic.com
I believe T-Byrne motorsports sells them for $200.
They are way better than the stock head gaskets, esp for a boosted motor.
