Default Thank god I got an ATI Product!

Well I was helping a buddy put in his "bolt on" turbo kit last night. Actually it's been over the last three weeks, but last night was the "stay up till 6 in the morning to just get it done" night. It was the most fab work I've every done on a self proclaimed "bolt on" product. Nothing fit well! And some of the stuff is just stupid the way it was fabricated.

It makes me truely appreciate the job ATI did on my procharger. Not to say I didn't have to make a few cuts and what not to get it to fit right. But NOTHING like the stuff we had to go through to get that Turbo kit on. I think people see numbers and think that's all there is too it. My D1 might not dyno insane numbers, but I'll tell you what it is a truly well built product and was properly designed for our cars.

There was a part of me that was somewhat regretful that I didn't go the turbo route. I mean look at the numbers some of these guys are putting up. Well every local guy I know who has one is going through hell. I guess at the cost of a little dyno bragging rights I'm happy that I have a "seemingly" more reliable setup. I mean bragging rights are cool, but if you can't drive the car then what fun is that?

Mike

w3rd...

i prefer turbo's to S/C but after helping install a d1-sc kit on Na$ty-ta's car, i'm kinda leanin towards procharger. very nice kit for the most part. and for 5k it's had better be.

A ATI system is a poorly designed kit IMO.If you are running less than 10 psi on a stock engine they work okay.I agree on the easy install. When you build an engine for boost like I did and break belts constantly it gets annoying real quick. The blower bracket is poorly designed and flexes under high boost. If I was going FI again it would be a turbo.I would much rather take more time installing than breaking belts constantly.

I think the ATI was designed well for what it was designed for. (What did I say? ) It does GREAT. But, more work is needed to get high boost levels, just as 422 SS said.

$20-30, depending. Not fun to keep replacing them. I'm not happy about approaching $150, and know there have been others to spend more. I *think* I might be in the clear now...knock knock^2

Damn guys, you all need to get some Napa belts. not only has mine been running strong for months. but it's hit as high as 8.5 lbs. of boost and the belt has a lifetime warrenty. The only way I'll have to pay more money is if I blow the belt on the highway and completely lose it. And even then they already gave me a new belt when I lost the first belt. So far I've been through 2. Third one is a charm

An ATI or QMP Turbo kit is the way to go. I know some people like fabbing and making their own stuff, but too much can go wrong.

It's a custom job no matter what. I'll just say that the QMP kit is a tight fit, but sometimes if it don't fit at all, ya gotta cut it or fk it.

LOL!!! It seems that there is NO kit that is a purchase and just go on kit w/out some kind of work. From what I have been reading.. Most of the kits are designed around stock setups.. Once you try to go beyond that you are on your own.. Recently I was doing the math on what it would cost to produce a nice high horsepower turbo setup or SC'd setup.. I came to the conclusion I could purchase a 99 Z28 or good condition Grand National or restore a 69 Camaro to stock condition. Basically I could buy another car..

Chris I have to decide whether to spend a gang of money or be responsible.. Just last night a good friend of mine got busted for Street Racing. Its a felony in my area. The bad thing with me is I do not like going to the track. I have no desire to race down the track to wait 30 minutes to 2 hours to run again. So many people go to the track in my area that you spend more time socializing than actually racing. I am seriously thinking about getting into road racing. Atleast there is no waiting and the fun last longer. If I chose road racing I have to decide whether to stay NA or go mild supercharged setup. I could easily purchase some 6.0L heads and have someone put some 918's in them and just purchase a V9 or ATI. I could install the heads myself and end up spending around 6k installed. I wish I could get a 382ci all bore long block for that price. I would go that route, but no dice.. It sucks having money burning a hole in your pocket and cant decide which route to go. Everytime I read the board someone is having some kind of major issue.. Whether NA or FI..
