I need a 3/8" NPT to -8AN ORB male/male fitting, but I can only find 3/8" NPT to -8AN 37° flare male/male fittings. Would it be all right to just buy what's available and cut the flare off? Of course, I'd throw an o-ring on there too. What I don't want is to use three fittings (-8AN ORB, a coupler, and an AN to NPT fitting). Thanks.

Because ORB adapters are relatively rare, one can be fashioned using a 37 degree AN (Army/Navy) flare fitting because the threads are compatible in diameter, pitch and spacing. To do this, a suitable o-ring, washer and nut are obtained separately. The flared end of the male AN flare is machined off. Optionally, a chamfer tool (or, if one cannot be obtained, a drill bit) can then be used to knock the inside shoulder off and make a reverse or inward angle that will smooth the flow of the fluid into the fitting bore. The last step is often unnecessary because most applications don't require a smooth flow of fluid unless operating at an extremely high flow rate.
So do our LSx cars operate "at an extremely high flow rate"? If so, that answers my other question about flow, and what tells me what I need to do about it.
Of course, this information is only as good as its source. I'll let you know if my car goes up in flames! ...if I survive, that is.
The O-Ring Boss & the 37 JIC Flare use the same threads. The difference is the way each thread seals. While the JIC seals on the metal-to-metal flare, the ORB seals on an O-ring ... An O-ring seal offers the best leak free connection.
I'm finding this source excellent because it even lists torque specs at the bottom! However, looking at the directory in which the PDF resides, I'm pretty sure the specs are for steel fittings.
