"and when i put my finger on it and smell it it smells like gas.. i have had numerous people tell me i am running rich"
When you put your finger on it you're not at wide open throttle and thus you're operating in closed loop (if not, you'll have a check engine light.) When operating in closed loop your mixture is held at 14.7:1.
You have no idea if you're running lean or rich at WOT. You need to at least check the S1 O2 sensors at WOT with a diagnostic scanner to get an idea of your WOT mixture. Get autotap (it's software that is used with a laptop computer) or find someone who has it. Or, if you might talk someone with a Tech II (what your local GM dealer has) to take a ride with you.
