What is the best octane to use? I've always run 93, is 94 better and what is the lowest you could run?

Sunoco stopped carrying 94. They banned mtbe in New York and CT which is what gave it that extra octane. So they stopped selling it thruoghout New England. I've seen people run 87 no problem but there is a performance loss.

Highest they sell in Washington State is 92 octane, and that's what I run all the time. I get a little pinging on the high end when it's hot out... most of the time it's okay, though.

87 octane is just asking for trouble.

Yea defiantly 91+ or you might see some detonation which could result in power loss.

I ran 89 before I got my costco card now I get the 91 there. I never had any problems. Cali sucks unless you buy racr fuel the best you can get is 91.

Not yet, not until Jan. 1st 2004.

Sunoco is phasing them out now, get yours while it's still avail.

I ran 89 and 91 for most of the time depending how much $$$ is left in my wallent.

I always run 93.

I can get 91, but its the same price, so I don't bother.

Can I safely run 89 on a stock compression LS1 in the winter?

I've run the cheap gas every now and then in the winter to see if there was any difference in the way the car ran. The car ran just as strong. But I always run 93 in the summer.

Highest you can get here in OKC is 91 except for a couple of Sinclair stations that have 93. That really sucks, I would buy 100 if there was a place to get it at the pump. It would really be a pain to have to go to RedRock to fill up all the time.

what would happen if you put in 93 octane then dropped in one of those bottles of ocatane booster? would it really jack something up or would it perform like a maniac?

Also, do you really get better performance out say a 93 octane than a 91 or is it just a personal preference?

The octane boosters bottles only raise it a 1/2 point. Your going to need alot of that to bring it up high.

91 explodes quicker (in milliseconds that is, compared to the 93) but takes lower temp to explode it.
93 is for less denotation in a high boost/compression engine, which means slower explosion but takes higher temp to explode it.

Denotation occurs when the fuel in the combustion chamber explodes AFTER the spark timing and after Top Dead Center.

Pre-igition occurs when the fuel explodes before the piston reaches Top Dead Center.

Top Dead Center = TDC and it means when the piston already reached the end of it's stroke in the chamber to crankshaft roation and it's just about to beign the downward stroke.

I just run the cheapest gas in all of the beater cars I don't care about for it's long term reliabity, just fill it and burn it.

I run the 87 in my lawn engines, I experimented with higher octane and saw no effect other than noticing the smell is different when using Cam2 100 octane fuel.

Even my SS exhaust fumes smells like superglue when using Cam2 100 octane (clear fuel)
I see no real point in using the Cam2 except the speedbikes often fill it up with that stuff, it's $5.95 a gal for that Cam2 100 octane

DO NOT LISTEN TO Midnight F-117A!!!!!!! Never run 87!!DO not run lower then 93 octane if at all possible! Do you not know how bad detonation is on your pistons? You will thank me later when you buddy fries his pistons and you keep on truckin'. I live in Florida, and the temp is almost always around 90+ degrees. That is why I buy high octane fuel, and when needed for doze hat summa dayz, I get octane booooster. Does it work.........no, it stops pings and detonation, not one bit of performance gain at all. I just spend an extra 5 bucks every 2-3 tanks to save my pistons. That is your answer, running between 112-91 you shouldn't see problems. Running higher or lower then you risk many things. What you need is to start a thread in the Drag Racing fourm about the best/highest fuel you can run at the track. We have THE BEST LS1 drag race techies on the net.
