Default Sumped Tank users inside please.

I've been thinking about buying a sumped tank and external pump to help my fueling blues. I was wondering what problems sumped tank users have. here's a couple things I have been wondering about:

Where to mount the external pump? Do you ever worry about running over something and having it ripped right out of the car?

Do you still have you evap lines? I was thinking about Nasty Nates sumped setup. He says the EVAP and return lines are in their stock location for a 99+. But it's got to be a metal tank to mount the sump so I'm wondering what it looks like up top and if everything works the way it should.

Have any trouble with emissions? Here in Maryland we can hook up to the OBDII but we still have to do a gas cap pressure test. I've passed with the walbro, but I'm a little worried that a compeletely new sumped tank might have more problems passing this test. Any experience?

Any other issues I might have forgotten to ask about?

Thanks guys,
Mike

Hey John,

Do you have any pics of where and how your pump is mounted?

Thanks,
Mike

you got to be carefull when braking hard ( more so when the tank is less than 1/4 full), cause that exposes the inlet ( granted my tank is hillbilly sumped- i just added a bulk head connector to the lowest part ot the tank facing back - kinda like a sump but without the sump) and you can hear the pump whine when that happenes.

i have my pump mounted where the abs connectors and other wiring is above the axle on the driver side.

It is really difficult to get the fuel level to read correctly. You have to bend the stock mounting straps. It is best to weld in a -8am bung so you can run a proper breather/check valve (the stock breather isn't sufficent unless you want to spend 10min pumping 5 gallons of gas). ALL and all I really think the Speed inc tanks (Bmr makes it ) is garbage. Mine was shipped to me with a whole in it. i didn't notice this until I started filling it with gas. THen I had to take it back down and get it boiled out, then welded up. Lastly, I am really unhappy with the baffling inside the tank. If I could do it again I wwould have gotten a 98 tank and sumped that - never again.

Well I'm boost referenced so I'm seeing more than 60 psi. But that being said all I can tell you is I can't get consistant fuel pressure. It climbs to ~65 psi and then just stops rolling with the boost.

There are too many "what if's" for me to accurately sift through. here's the What if's I've gathered:

*Bad FPR. Apparently some say the bladder in my Aeromotive is not the best and might be why boost referencing isn't working well.

*Fuel filter. I just last night found out it's called a "prefilter". I still don't know what the different is, but I think it's too small for the amount of fuel I'm trying to flow.

*Fuel line. This is one that I'm sort of guessing on. but I have my -6AN supply line tied to the stock supply and evap lines, so it makes a bunch of 90* turns. Maybe this is hurting the flow more than a basically staright path with sweeping curves would. i was just trying to pretect the line from the cats and other things.

*Fuel pump mounting. Maybe the way I've mounted my walbro inside the outer casing of a stock unit is causing too much heat or is causing it not to seat properly.

*Fuel level. I'm guilty of running the tank low on a somewhat regular basis. Am I just burning these pumps up cause I run the tank low?

*FP gauge sending unit mounted on FPR and not the rail. Am I getting an inaccurate reading because of this? In theory it's on the pressure side so it shouldn't matter. But I suppose onme could make the point that it needs to be mounted on the rail.

I'm sure there's a few more, but these are all I can think of. I'm up in the air on which direction to turn.

Dave, I know we looked at this before but the problem still exsists. So that's why i'm thinking of scraping the current setup for a sumped. I mean I hate to throw money at a problem, but what else can I do. I could spend just as much trying to fix those seperate issues and then would still have a rather light fuel supply system.

I'm always open to suggestion though. Let me know what you guys think.

Mike

i dont think it would be too expensive to just go after the pinch points one at a time and see if the problem goes away... i would also ask rice etr what fpr he is using from aeromotive as it is working well.. i have the speed inc one.

look at smokinhawks fuel system stuff, he drilled some holes in the plastic part for better flow i think.

i think you will regret doing a big external pump as your car is still very nice and streetable.
