Default Cng?

What do you guys think of CNG injected engines. I think it really has some benefits over gasoline. With all of the hype nowadays with flex fuel and hybrid vehicles I think this is better than both. Its 130 octane so you can make some awesome power with it granted you will have to have some really high compression and strong chrome plated valves and good oiling sytem. And with CNG its burns so clean the engine never gets carboned up or dirty the oil near as fast as gasoline. Plus it puts out hardly any emissions. So I guess im just wondering what you guys think of it and why we arent seeing more CNG vehicles produced.

CNG tanks have to be a whole lot higher grade than
propane, and liquefied is really how you'd rather store
fuel.

I could see doing a propane conversion and put a
turbo, too; propane (and CNG) like compression. I
have maybe half a dozen places near me where I
could get filled (but pain-in-the-***-slow). Lot of
folks down here have propane appliances, more
than natural gas seems like. So I could get the big
tank in the yard and fill at leisure.

But go on a road trip and discover the holes in the
infrastructure.

I heard you can get a sytem to run off your house Natural Gas if you have it. I guess they put a compressor on the system and let it fill your car tank as well and with that the time really is no big deal.

CNG is a great fuel. I have two cars that run natural gas. See my sig.

We don't see more CNG vehicles (NGV's) due primarily to political reasons. In a nutshell, natural gas is the ONLY real competition to gasoline. The last thing big oil and W want you to do is stop buying their product. Think about it, if the US wasnt addicted to imported petroleum would we even be in Iraq? (3K Dead, 25K wounded)

As far as infastructure goes, I respectfully disagree with the prior post. The natural gas infastructure in the western and central states is surpased only by water. Virtually 97% of all residences have a natural gas line. Anyone can install a NG compressor and fill their car at home. Say bye-bye to visiting a gas station. In california, I can fill up at home for ~$1.60 per gallon or at the local station for ~$1.88 per gallon (for comparsion, regular gasoline is $2.55). CNG is 30% Domestic and 70% Canadian. Petroleum is 15% domestic and 60% middle east. The choice is obvious.

Most commercial fill stations take 4-5 minutes for a fill up. Home refueling appliances take several hours, but the idea using a HRA is that you fill up overnight while you sleep.

Station availability is very dependent on where you live. In california we have over 250 stations available. I drove from southern california to las vegas NV for the sema show in my NGV with no problems at all. It does take planning however. Many stations have their own charge card because they service fleet operators (Shuttles, Taxis, Buses, Trash trucks). If I need to load up the family and take a huge trip, we take the bi-fuel Tahoe. It runs both gasoline and CNG.

The cleanest car available is the Honda Civic GX. Sadly it is the only NGV currently sold in the US. Several states offer incentives, rebates and tax breaks which can knock anywhere from $4K to $8K off the price. Several states offer incentives for home refuelers.
