Default question about acetone and MPG

My chief on my ship said that his friend said that if you added a couple of ounces of acetone per 10 gallons of gas that your MPG would go up drastically. It apparently has to do with "burning all the fuel during combustion" Anybody have any opinions on this?

Try it and see. Most you will loose if it doesn't work is about $8.

Will it harm the standard fuel lines? I dont know, just thought I'd mention it as I know some fuels can. I suppose its such a small amount.

I think this adiditive may work better in older cars, the newer EFI controlled ones burn pretty much all the fuel in the chamber anyway.

Acetone is extremely volatile, not explode in your face volatile, but it evaporates almost instantly as soon as you remove it from its container. So if you put a few ouces into your gas tank it would probably evaporate before it traveled down the fill tube. If you mixed it with your gas before you put it in your tank it might stay in solution, but more than likely it would evaporate out of that since it is less dense than gas, and would float at the top of the gas and evaoporate still. However, if you got it in your tank, and it did not evaporate it probably would just clean out some carbon build up at best. I would just stick to fuel injector cleaner.

Sounds like pre EFI folk lore to me. A wideband sensor will reveal that when you are in closed loop fueling the stock sensors are doing their job to give you the best possible burn. Departing closed loop fueling, ie. WOT, open loop, that is entirely up to your right foot. Running an additive as a preventative measure to keep your fuel system clean to account for variances in your fuel shopping/availibility is one thing, trying to find comparable fuel economy between a modified F/Y body and a toyota corrola, you might as well switch everything else in your life like changing to Lite ciggarrettes, soybean burgers, and old slow fat women. I can't wait to be blamed for being the one who used up all the gas in the world.

......mechanical engineering... thermodynamics....fluids... some people need to do their homework.

it can increase mpg, by no means drastically ,but it can

I’m digging up an old thread...

So, for those that actually did mix acetone with their gas, you have had a few years to test it now. Do you still think it’s a good idea?
