Default question about the trap door method

just wondering what tools i could use to cut the hole, i dont have access to a air compressor to use a nibbler, and i dont have a dremel tool either, any hand tools that would work good or some kind of drill bit?

I used an angle grinder. Just make sure you only go deep enough to go thru the metal. There is under an inch between there and the gas tank!

I drilled a large hole to get it started (again, be VERY careful and stop as soon as you puncture the metal), then used aviation snips to cut out the panel.

I didn't want to use the cutoff tools like most everyone else. I didn't feel comfortable making all the sparks while sitting on top of a fuel tank. I went to my local Ace Hardware and rented some electric sheet metal shears for $9. I made a hole with a 1" hole saw then used the shears. They cut it like butter and made absolutely no mess. best way to go I think

use anything that will cut through metal. It's very easy- just don't go too deep!

I brought a dremel just for cutting the trap door hole.

Be careful not to go deep, and not only will you cut into the tank you will cut the 3 pipes that come out of the top of the tank which are even closer to the metal you are cutting.

Get a dremel, be patient, take time doing it. If you rush it may take you 10mins less, but dont forget that hole will be there for the life of the car.

Differnent years require a hole in a different place, eg. I beleiw '99 to a 2000 TA the trap doorneed to be in a different place, only about 8 inches different, but best to check before you cut.

I used a sheel of aluminum with some sticky back foam and screws to seal the hole up afterwards.

Unclip the 3 pipes they are push fit fittings by squeesing the collar with your fingers they will come off.

The pump is held in with a large locking ring. You need to tun this anti-click widwI tihnk, you will see buy how its latched in. The first time done this I made sure the top of the tank was dry (no fuel) and hit this ring with a screw driver and hammer, be careful not to puncture the tank, but eventually I got the ring to turn, and lifted the pump out.
