Default Hard Starting

my 97 z has a starting problem. i have to crank it over like 10 times before it starts.i work at car dealership and i had a mechanic look at it and he tested the fuel pressure regulator and he said it was fine then he lifted up the car and tested the pressure in the the lines underneath the car and he said that the pressure is being lost in the lines from the tank and thats why i have to crank the car over so many times to get it to start because the fuel is just going back into the tank and not staying in the lines for the next startup.
Do you think sounds right,that i need a new fuel pump? please help me out this is quite annoying!! Not to mention embarassing when some comes up and says oh wow this a nice car and then i gotta crank it a million times just to start it

mine does the EXACT same thing. I've found that if you turn the key a few times really fast (without cranking it)to prime the pump it will start. To tell you the problem,does your SES light come on? Mine does and it say's it's an EVAP problem. But what is wrong with yours AND mine is the CHECK VALVE in the pump. You have to replace the pump to fix it. Just a reason to upgrade to the Racetronix kit since a stock unit is about $1K installed. Do the work yourself and save some serious $$$~Cole~

so do i need the whole pump assembly or just the pump itself?

From what i gathered from GM you can only get the whole assembly. I'm not 100%sure though. I know i checked Napa and you have to get he whole assembley($680 big ones)That would include the sending unit and ****. I'm opting for the Racetronix Fuel Kit which replaces JUST the pump and the harness. You then keep stock sending unit. From what i know it's just the pump that's bad but i also am trying to check that out for sure. ~Cole~

Yup, probably a bad check valve in the pump. You can confirm that by installing a pressure gauge, and if you shut off the engine and the fuel pressure drops to near zero very quickly, then it is deffinately the pump.

For '97 I don't know. You can try and get just the pump, and if it's not available they will certainly tell you.

Replace your pump, no issues about it..
Sounds like its not priming properly! Thats all.
Once the flow is going, its going... Thats a good symptom of BAD PUMP!
